ohio casinos
i just returned from Akron and there were "games of skill parlors" aka slot machines were located everywhere . so i ventured in and placed one dollar into the machine...i won twice! but when i looked at my total i lost 60 cents?
so when leaving i stopped at mountaineer on a Thursday morning, the parking lot was full and all of the plates were from Ohio?
i witnessed a man win 10k on a slot machine .
i cant figure why Ohio turned down the casinos and opted for the traffic cameras to increase the revenue of civic treasuries?
buckeyes...go figure?

I wondered the same thing, htlong. You should see all the people from Ohio in Kentucky and Indiana for the casinos. They dont want to bring them to Ohio because of the crime and addiction they bring along.

I helped gather signatures to get the gambling issue on the ballot. I would first tell voters if they wanted to help pump 3 billion into the Ohio economy. They were interested at first but as soon as I brought up slots it was like they suddenly became holier than thou. "Oh I dont want the social problems involved with it". This state can never reach its potiential until these backwards people move away.

i think the only corruption from casinos would come from the elected officials.
i cant believe the school zone cameras in Akron, when was the last child hit by a car in a school zone in Akron? not in my lifetime, but they use the "its for the children" call to generate money for their projects.
I'm sure the money from casinos would be lost just like the money from the lottery, but think of the gas Ohioans would save not having to drive to another state!

I just dont understand why they wouldnt want to bring casinos to the state. Pittsburgh is going to be building a casino. I think in a horrible section along the river, but hey. Dont know what they were thinking on that one. Like Vader said, people (Ohioans) are spending billions in other states. I know the same was happening in Pennsylvania with them going to West Virginia and New Jersey. I have no idea what is wrong with some Ohioans. I dont see horrible crime and addiction coming to the state if casinos were built. Is this any different than the lottery? If people go to casinos all the time and get addicted that is their problem.

i just visited Akron over Christmas and many, many parts of the city were scary from crime, and drugs, gangs run rampant carrying guns and drugs, think if these people had a chance to get a job! the prostitutes could become cocktail waitress's and triple their salaries, maintenance workers, dealers etc. in the end the crime has already taken over ,but with shootings and robberies, give them jobs...if they build it they will work, Akron doesn't have much to offer to the non skilled workers this could be a partial solution

"i think the only corruption from casinos would come from the elected officials." Exactly...and the only reason I personally didn't want the amendment to pass. The PA bill was different, as it allowed developers to bid competitively to build the casinos; the Ohio bill would have allowed two particular development corps - written directly into the bill - to develop particular parcels of land. In sum, the Ohio bill was designed to make a handful of people VERY rich in the name of stimulating the economy. I can see why this would turn off other voters - not just the "morality vote". I can understand competitive bidding for legalized gambling in this state, but an amendment particularly designed to make a couple people rich and, in theory, send some money towards education (like the lottery money...whatever happened to that, anyway?) is too shady to get my vote.

yes yes and yes. I agree with most things here in DD's post. However, one reason not mentioned (which is why i voted against the amendment) is how much of the actual funding would see the kids in the schools! Not muc at all! I don't remember the exact stats, seeing as how the election was 3 months ago, but no competitive bidding was also a major concern of mine.
(i think we need to focus on why our federal funding for schools was taken away and get it back!)
