The Steubenville area is in Appalachian Ohio, which means the landscape is quite scenic, with plenty of rolling hills and woods. If you like country living, with some nice scenery this is the place.
Steubenville itself is a small city and used to be a pottery manufacturing center, which means its an old factory town, sort of gritty in the older parts. The town is strung out along the Muskingum River valley, with more the suburban areas north of town, which is where all the shopping is at.
Follow the river north to Dresden, which I here is developing into a little anique center. South along the river to Marietta is one of the better scenic drives in the state.
The state is developing the Flint Ridge area to the west into a state park.

I grew up in Richmond and my parents still live there. What would you like to know?
It is a tiny town...no stoplights, an occasional cop, two gas stations. To clarify, Steubenville lies on the Ohio River, not the Muskingum and it was (and still is to some extent) a steel town. It was East Liverpool that was known for pottery.
Children who live in Richmond attend the Edison school district which isn't the best in the world, but certainly isn't the worst, either. There is one elementary school in town and the high school is located there, too. The middle school would be East Springfield for those living in Richmond.
Being a small town, people tend to be very nosy, but mostly friendly. The houses in town were mostly built in the 1800's and there is actually a museum called the Crew House that was a stop on the Underground Railroad.
The area is very hilly, as Jeffrey T mentioned, and many of the back roads are also very windy. As far as the weather goes, it does snow there, but not even close to the amounts received in other parts of the state.
I will tell you that there aren't many jobs available in the area, which is one of the main reasons I left. The steel mills have been in trouble for years, although Wheeling Pitt was recently purchased by a Chicago company with a good reputation for turning unprofitable companies around. There are two hospitals in Steubenville, though, and if you are willing to drive you could always work in St. Clairsville or even Robinson/Pittsburgh, depending on what you do for work.
If you have any specific questions about anything, I'll try to help as much as I can. I must say, I'm surprised to see anyone ask about Richmond! I didn't even think anyone knew it existed...

Richmond is nice Steubenville is high crime
I lived in the Ohio Valley all my life. Steubenville is a very high crime area especially downtown. There is a lot of drug use there also the neighboring town of Weirton, WV has is becoming worse as they are putting in more and more gambling establishments. They had over thirty last i had heard. You can pretty much count on if a place says "and more" in its name they have slot machines including, Dunkin Donuts and more, no I am not kidding. This type if gambling is illegal in nearby areas in PA and Ohio. Richmond is very nice I've been there several times and am thinking of moving there myself. A
lot of people in this area work in Robinson, PA or in Pittsburgh which can be a considerable (about an hour or even more depending on how far out you live) drive from there. My Mother lived in West virginia nearby and worked in Pittsburgh. Wintersville, (west of Steubenville) is a very nice area very beautiful and with a really low crime level. Bloomingdale is also very nice although very small but in a great location just off route 22 to have easy access to work. Other nice but further out areas would be East springfield, Amsterdam (which has two playgrounds for kids), and Bergholz. These are way out for people who like country living and privacy. The whole area is very hilly and picturesque except in the run down areas like downtown Weirton and downtown Steubenville which are kind of depressing and high crime. We lived in Smithfield for about 8 years. It is nice although kind of run down and little. It is a little country village. They have the county fair out there which is a lot of fun. There is a beautiful Lake near Richmond also called Austin Lake. They have camping fishing and swimming. It is one of my favorite places. We also lived in Toronto, OH. It is nice if you aren't in town. In town it can be pretty bad too. If you want to see Steubenville's crime level go to this link: http://www.city-data.com/city/Steubenville-Ohio.html. You can also check out the crime level of anywhere else there, too and they even tell you how many sex offenders are in an area and where they live.

Jeffery, are you sure you're not thinking of Zanesville?!
When you talk about a pottery manufacturing center...sort of gritty in the older parts...strung out along the Muskingum River valley, with more shopping north of town...where you can follow the river north to Dresden...
That all seems to describe Zanesville better than it does Steubenville.
It caught my attention because, well...I'm considering a move to Zanesville myself!

I am actually interested in Richmond. My only concern is that we are now in Weirton Wva, and the coke plant is killing us, we are coughing so much and all. That little town, does it get effected by the coke plant at all or no. How cheap is the rentals there, I have been wanting to drive through there.

Hi, I live in Florida and I am considering moving to Wintersville Ohio. My husband currently works for Comcast Cable and they are hiring in Wintersville. My family lives in Canton Ohio. I am from there. My mortgage in Florida went from $900.00 a month to $1800.00 a MONTH!!! because of homeowners insurance (because of the hurricanes in the past few years). I have a 1 yr old, a 3 yr old and a 12 yr old. So good schools and a safe neighborhood is important to me. I just want to be able to afford to live without having my husband have to work every day of the week to barely survive. Would this be a wise move (Hollywood Florida to Wintersville Ohio)??? How much does rent run down there? Do you know of any Comcast Cable technicians that I could speak to about their pay and what it's like to work for their company there in Ohio? Thanks for your time, Angela
