Bordeaux chocolates from Malley's is the one product made here that I gift. IMO, Malley's Bordeaux candies are the best and most unique food product made in Greater Cleveland.

On the receiving end, I normally get a shipment of Tony Packo's Hungarian Hot Dogs, chili, and a mix of Pickles & Peppers every Christmas from the folks. I do love some German inspired Texas Hill Country sausage, and Texas barbecue, but there is definitely a spot in my heart for a Tony Packo's dog!

Thanks for the link to Malley's. I don't think I've ever heard of them.

Esther Price candy goes to family out of state.

Mikesells chips are a desired item.

As are Cassano's pizzas:

And Graeter's Ice Cream.

Cincinnait's Graeter's French pot ice cream often is rated as one of the best ice creams made in the U.S. There is now at least one Graeter store in Greater Cleveland and their ice cream is sold in several Cleveland supermarkets.

I wonder if Graeter is expanding out-of-state as well.

I used to send friends Mike Sell's potato chips until they quit making them with peanut oil. Now they're just plain ol' potato chips.

Whenever I'm in Cincinnati, I'll buy a half dozen packets of chili mix and send it to a friend in New Mexico. She loves that stuff - too salty for me!

In the Philly burbs, I can find Graeter's at either Whole Foods or Wegman's. The selection is limited - usually six or seven regular flavors and the flavor of the month - but as long as they have raspberry chip I'm not disappointed.

When I visit my mom in Erie, the Giant Eagle there has about a dozen flavors.

I live near Youngstown - Buckeye candy, Gorant candy, Peppers and Oil from "Cafe 422". Bread from Warren Bakery, Bread from Ukrainian Village in Parma, Butter maid Kolacki, fresh sweet corn, apples, maple syrup, blueberry Donuts from White House and anything Elderberry.

A lot more, but cooked food doesn't travel well, so I'll rule out pan fried walleye and perch with red cabbage.

You need to come here to eat that.

I had never heard of Gorant candy. I looked at their catalog. Are the milk chocolate covered almond meltaways good?

Catalog « Gorant Chocolatier

Thanks for mentioning Gorant!

I was surprised by the lack of cremes and dark chocolate offerings.

My brother loves dark chocolate rum cremes, which used to be readily available in Lake County until Brandt's stopped making them a few years ago. After an extensive search, the only place that I could find in the entire country that offers them is Mrs. Cavanaugh's in Salt Lake City. Mrs. Cavanaugh's seems to specialize in cremes, offering all of their cremes both in milk and dark chocolate.

I don't know about Gorant, but Malley's has a candy factory similar to Mrs. Cavanaugh's. I've suggested to Malley's that they offer a comprehensive creme selection such as Mrs. Cavanaugh's, but obviously they are not interested. I know from experience that Malley's production capacity is tapped out during the holiday season.

Malley's has about 20 store locations throughout Greater Cleveland and in Akron and Canton. Three stores flank Cuyahoga Valley National Park, if anybody is interested while exploring the CVNP.

Several Malley's stores also have old-fashioned ice cream parlors. What is special there is maple walnut fudge sundaes. Well over a decade ago, I bought Malley's maple walnut fudge sauce and shipped it to a friend in California who missed it. After buying a hand-packed jar of the maple walnut fudge sauce at the Mentor ice cream parlor, I had to ship it in dry ice, an expensive, cumbersome undertaking. I wonder if that is still required, because Malley's offers their regular fudge sauce without walnuts for shipping in their catalog. It appears dry ice no longer is required, but that fudge probably is safely packed at the factory for shipment.

I hope that Malley's still has maple walnut fudge sundaes in their ice cream parlors when they reopen, post-COVID this spring.

Anyway, Malley's fudge sauce would be another excellent Ohio product to offer as a gift. Walnuts could be added before serving, but it's still not as special as would be a jar of their maple walnut fudge sauce!

It appears that maple walnut fudge could be made at home. Martha Stewart offers this recipe for chocolate maple sauce. With experimentation, perhaps a maple sauce without chocolate could be perfected. Then walnuts could be added. Probably, it should still be refrigerated and shipped in dry ice unless canned, an entirely different hassle.
