Default Lorain County?

I have a friend who lives in Elyria and tells me that the area is perfect for me to relocate to... i'm a single mom with 2 kids, one will be starting 9th grade and the other 5th, I need to research this area and would appreciate input as to good schools, cost of rentals etc..

Thanx!

P.S. we would be coming from Alaska

I grew up in Lorain County (18 years). Elyria is a medium sized city and has its good and bad parts. Do you have a job lined up? About how much will you be making? The good new is, a lower to middle-lower income will go fairly far there (around $500-600 for a two bedroom apartment).

I've been out of high school for quite some time, but from what I remember, the school system there isn't the greatest in the world, and neither are the neighboring city schools (North Ridgeville and Brookside). I would look at either sending your children to Elyria Catholic School System or possibly moving to Western Elyria as I believe it is still in the Amherst School District, which is much much better.

Elyria is a city of about 56,000 in the Cleveland area. For the most part Elyria is a pretty nice city, or at least an average city. It has lost a lot of manufacturing jobs just like a lot of larger cities throughout the region. The school system isnt the best but it all depends on what school your kids will be going to (as far as Elementary, if you send them to public schools).

As far as the neighborhoods: The nicest area in the city is just north of downtown around Washington Ave. up to Overbrook Rd. The North side (NE) is the nicest area and has very low crime. The Eastside is also very nice for the most part, and the Southeast side is nice with newer, large houses. The Westside is more mixed neighborhoods, the farther west the better but it really depends on the street. The Southside (Southcentral, S of 6th street between the river branches) and SW side is the worst area of the city, theres a lot of poverty and it has a high crime rate. I grew on the southside along with central Lorain, and I wouldnt recommend living down there if you are looking for a nice place.

Default Come to Avon Lake

Hi, Avon Lake or Avon are great places to live in Lorain County. I think you would be so much happier here. The schools are outstanding and I just saw in the PRESS that you can rent homes in the area for as little at $850. There really are not any "Bad" parts of Avon Lake. Funny thing is that I just met another family that JUST moved here (Avon Lake) from Alaska. Elyria is ok but not great and I don't think their public school system is even close to the Avlon Lake numbers. You are closer to Cleveland, closer to the lake, closer to so much more.

My friend in Elyria said her dh claims Avon lake is mainly gay oriented?
I'm not discriminating just that, i'm not gay, single, straight mom.
the family that moved from AK, I would love to know how they did it? I'm down sizing but geesh! even to ship 2,000 lbs AND my vehicle is going to cost $$$

You wont find anyplace around the Cleveland area thats "mainly" gay oriented. The only place even close to that would be Lakewood and possibly Rocky River, but even both of those places have a majority straight (by far) population.

Having moved from Lorain County, I personally would not want my children to attend Elyria Schools.
