Moving to Tiffin, need help please
I'm relocating to Tiffin in August, for school. I currently live in Kansas, so I am making this move blind. Scary thoughts.... I have seen various ads in the newspaper for apartments for rent, but I don't want to wind up in a roach infested run down place. So really, I'm looking for advice on what areas to steer clear of I guess... I'm also keeping in mind that I may need to live in one of the outlying towns. I was already looking at Findlay as well.....Someone please help!!!

Honestly, you're much better off getting a showing of the apartments before you commit to anything. While I've never heard of roach problems around the area, I guess I could never rule them out. I do, however, remember going into apartments where it looked like the prior tenant took a hammer to the walls, or things that definitely needed to be fixed by the small-time landlord before I'd ever consider moving in. Since you're not going to visit the area before you move, you actually have an incentive to live in the dorm for at least a year, view apartments, then move in to something you'd enjoy.
I cannot speak for the apartments in Tiffin, but generally speaking, something in Findlay between $500/mo. and $600/mo. will be decent areas. However, keep in mind you'll be commuting about 50 miles every trip for school. Gas and time do rack up. There are some management companies around, but often times you'll see mom & pops that buy a house, hack it up into apartments, and rent it out. However, I've seen and heard too many uncooperative landlord stories to actually take them seriously.

I wish I could live on campus. But I have a dog, and I can't leave him behind. It's really good to hear that there's not a roach problem in general there. Coming from Kansas, and Arizona before here, there a roaches...BIG ones! Having lived in apartments in Arizona I had to develop the habit of closing the sink and bathroom drains anytime they were not in use. Sewer roaches like to crawl up the drain pipes...no matter how much one cleans, there's no avoiding them. Gross!!! Oh my gosh the bugs and critters here in Kansas are much bigger than I've seen anywhere else I've lived!!! I was doing some yard work last summer and a cicada landed on me, I kid you not, it was the length of a credit card! I sure won't miss those!!

Sounds like the South. If there's an insect to be had in America, you'll find it there. I'm not fearful of insects so I'll watch them go about their business from time to time. I probably should've gone into entomology, but didn't think I could make a living of it at that time.
We've got the cicadas. Big. dumb. cicadas. Some people will still call them locust, but I don't get into a bugaboo (get it!? har har har) about that kind of stuff. I've only seen cicadas make noise, shells, and fly into objects repeatedly. There's plenty of other insects here to keep you busy. Also, if you ever see an earwig, don't worry, they're quite harmless. I've never heard anyone actually having them wander into their ears.
Oh! BTW, you should totally make a trip up to the Port Clinton/Marblehead/Sandsuky/Put-in-bay area a little after the fourth of July next year. I'd tell you why, but that'd ruin the surprize!

Critters
Well, I was raised in southern Washington (state) and earwigs were pretty common. And spiders...Those kind of bugs don't 'bug' me hehehe. Its the roaches that I hate.
So do you actually live in the Tiffin area? Or are you elsewhere? Just wondering because I'm sure I'll be wondering about various things to do there.
As far as the living situation..I think I'm just going to have to gamble and blindly choose a place from the newspaper. Unless of course you live in that area and would be willing to do some recon. for me....hehehe
So the 4th of July is pretty good up there huh? That'll be nice... They don't do much here because it's a pretty small town, and in Arizona airborne fireworks are illegal...fire hazards and all...

Nope, Findlay's my forte (born and raised). I don't go to Tiffin all that much, unless it's a special occassion. I'm not one to do recon, though, sorry. There are a few bars up there with some good people, otherwise it's a sleepy town. I highly recommend networking at college (I'll take a stab and say Heidelberg) as soon as humanly possible.
Every now and then the Ritz will get a good act in, but most likely you'll be headed for entertainment elsewhere in the area. I was being facetious about the Port Clinton/Marblehead area. That's when hordes of Mayflies secure themselves to everything on the coast.
Airborne fireworks are also against the law, however, there's a fireworks shop down on I-75 (Springfield Fireworks), which always struck me as a double-standard. Why grandfather something in, when their main source of business is what you ban?

We were in Tiffin today, and while we didn't look at housing, it seemed really quaint. (We finally signed a purchase agreement on a home in Findlay today.) We were there specifically to look at a lighting store and a kind of everything store. I wonder if you called the hospital if they might have someone in human resources that might be able to point you in a direction. I don't think it is a teaching hospital- so no residents that would be in need of housing, but you never know...

Tiffin Native and student
I dont think you have to worry to much about any roaches. Of cousrse they exist but Tiffin is generaly a clean well kept town with affordable options for living. Im not sure if you will be attending TU or Heidelberg, I go to TU, but both schools are located near residental areas and even if you dont live near your school, commuting in tiffin is a breeze. I dont like to speculate but Riverbend apts have a bad reputation, but they are cheap! So I guess you get what you pay for. If you stick close to the neiborhoods of the schools you will have many options. Tiffin is the safest place Ive ever lived, so you can be rest assured. I would also think this part of Ohio would be the closest thing to Kansas, as far as the values and landscape. One thing maybe different, in Kansas a town the size of tiffin may have more shopping or resturants. But this part of Ohio has many towns the size of tiffin peppering the landscape so there is no "shopping mecca" if you will. Findlay is only 20 minutes and can provide better seletion. One last thing Tiffin is pretty! The weather is what it is however, but the spring and fall are great. You will love Sept Oct and Nov., but you will get a little stir crazy in Feb and March and the begining of April. Good luck with your move!
