Question NE ohio towns? Family orientated?

I will most likely be moving to Ohio within the year, I am wondering about Youngstown, Niles, Mineral Ridge area. What are the towns like as far as, likability, taxes, property and income, school systems, people in general, crime rates, accessablility to community colleges, any information you have will be greatly appreciated. Big ?? How much is too much for housing?

Well, you've come to the right place. I'm assuming you may be transfering w/GM. Niles and Mineral Ridge are ok areas, they aren't bad, but there are better locations out there. Niles is home to one of our malls and they have lots of shopping, restaurants, hotels, and even minor league baseball (Mahoning Valley Scrappers Short Season Class A affiliate of the Cleveland Indians).

As i've mentioned in other posts, Howland, Cortland, Champion, and Liberty are some of the more desirable areas of Trumbull County. Most suburban and rural school districts are good to excellent. Most people avoid Warren city and Youngstown City schools, but i don't think Warren is as bad as everyone tries to make it sound.

I grew up in Cortland and have lived in Trumbull County my whole life. I think most people are friendly if you are friendly to them, but we do have our idiots just like everyone else. You'll be able to look up crime stats and the like on city-data's home page.

As for property taxes i guess it depends on the area. Usually the best areas have higher taxes. I know the cities of Youngstown, Warren and Niles also have a wage tax or city tax on top of property taxes. Also, school tax is included in your property tax.

Currently, we do not have a community college in the area, but supposedly we are getting one by 2010. Community colleges aren't as big in Ohio as they are in some other states. Locally we have Welcome to Youngstown State University-Home Page and Ohio Universities, Top Universities Trumbull and Salem branches. Kent State's main campus is about a 45 minute drive from Warren. Northeast Ohio has a ton of universities in general, so you shouldn't have a problem there.

As for home prices, that all depends on the area you are looking in. For Trumbull County i would be able to tell you how much is too much for the most part. Real Estate is a little hobby of mine, so i could find out the average price/sq/ft people are paying in a certain area. If you gave me an address, i can look up what the previous owner paid.

It sounds like you have a lot of questions, so feel free to ask. Also, you might want to read some of the other threads that have discussed some of the topics you are interested in.
