I may also be transferring to the GM Lordstown Plant, and noticed that you said you have some "rural" areas that you would normally recommend that were left off your list due to the desires to live in a more suburban area. My family has two young boys who love the outdoors, sports, and school. I'm looking for a fantastic rural or suburban setting that's within 1/2 hr. of the Lordstown plant. Schools need to be top notch also. What are the best choices in your opinion?
Thanks

I only have 30 seconds to type this, then I have to get my butt back to the Canfield Fair. The Lordstown plant is in the middle of a rural area. You will have plenty of choices. Let us know your price range, and some of your wants, and needs. I'll be able to give a more in depth answer after Labor Day.
You can also go to The Canfield Fair to see where most of our community is spending the weekend.

Let me help SCARAB30 first.
The only places to really avoid are anything within Youngstown city limits, or parts of Warren. I'm not familiar with how Warren is divided, but I believe that the part that is closest to Lordstown is one to avoid. Cortlandgirl will have to give details on anything North of Lordstown.
Thirty miles will get you all the way to the PA. State line to the East, and pretty close to Akron heading West. As I said earlier, Lordstown is built in a rural area. You may get lucky, and find something to rent right in the Village of Lordstown itself. If not, head South on Route 45. The area between there and Salem is very rural. Salem has lots of rentals in town. You may find a place to rent there. I know that Austintown has lots of rentals, but they are packed in like sardines. Newton Falls is also a small town to check for rentals. Boardman is a rental mecca, but it is very congested. That is the only place in the area that has traffic problems. Try these links to local papers. Vindy.com Local News Youngstown, Warren, Columbiana Ohio - news, sports and information - Vindy.com, The Vindicator MorningJournalNews.com | News, Sports, Jobs, Lisbon, Ohio - The Morning Journal TribToday.com - News, Sports, Jobs, Community Information - Tribune Chronicle - Warren, OH There used to be a paper in the convenient store racks called the Mini Merchant. I'm not sure if it still exists. One more thing. Berlin, Milton, Mosquito, West Branch, and Pymatuning are all fantastic lakes for boating, but Lake Erie is probably the only place to run a 30' Scarab the way it was meant to be run.

I have 3 fantastic schools in rural settings that I would recommend. All 3 are rated excellent by the State of Ohio. They are all different sizes, and prices too. I'll start off with the smallest, and probably cheapest.
Western Reserve Local Schools..... This hidden gem is directly South of GM by about 7 miles. It is comprised of Berlin, and Ellsworth Townships. School population K-12 is barely 800 kids. The school staff knows every kid, and they can't get away with anything. They are in the process of building a new school on the 150 acre high school property. Three windmills are already in place. They will power the new facility. They already have a a beautiful sports facility with a rubber track, separate shot-put, and discus fields, tennis courts, and the nicest concession stand that I have ever seen at a football field. I'm jealous of that. They play sports in the lower tier of the ITCL, and do well every year.
ITCL is Inter Tri County League. Tier is determined by size of school.
I went to WR. Two of my brothers, and my Mother still live in that district. I would have no problem sending my kids there. There are also quite a few millionaire business owners that are hiding out there. Their houses can't be seen from the road, but we know who they are.
The next larger, and slightly more expensive school is South Range.
We border Ellsworth, and Canfield to their South. The district is comprised of Beaver, and Green Townships. School population is 1300 kids K-12. We are in the process of building a new, one school campus. It will be finished in a year. This is another school district were staff, and parents know all of the kids. They aren't getting away with anything here either. We play sports in the upper tier of the ITCL. We go to playoffs every year, but never win the big game. The coach is well respected. We don't get many football scholarships because he doesn't focus on stars. It's a team effort, and they do well no matter what player is missing. We do get a lot of academic scholarships.
Green Township is closer to Lordstown, and is more rural of the two. Beaver is starting to build up with housing developments, and borders the very congested Boardman area. When people in the area compare schools, Canfield, and South Range are always used as the high benchmarks that they strive to be like.
The 3rd excellent district is Canfield. It is comprised of Canfield Township, and the City of Canfield. It's not like a normal city that most people think of. It's a village green with a few blocks of historical houses. There is no ghetto, and there is no high crime area. The Canfield police simply don't put up with that kind of crap. Canfield Township surrounds the City.
The school population K-12 is around 3000 kids. The only parts that are still rural, are to the South, and West. You guessed it, the areas bordering Western Reserve, and South Range. Canfield schools like to spend money, but you can still find affordable housing in the rural areas. There are many rich, and powerful families in the district. The most famous are Dr. John York, and his wife Denise Debartolo. You may know them as the owners of the San Francisco 49ers.
There are other good districts that are rural. I picked the three best with excellent ratings that are in Mahoning County. They are also fairly close to GM. Trumbull County has some too, but I'm not familiar with that area.

Looking through the vindy ads I went 9 pages before getting out of Austintown, and Boardman.
The Salem Morning Journal has one house in Salem, and a couple in Leetonia/Washingtonville. They are right next to Salem. Not a bad drive to Lordstown, decent for temporary living, but you could do better when buying a house. None of them are dangerous in any way.

My kids actually spent their formative years in Lordstown and really liked it and still consider it home. I think my oldest went through 4th grade and the youngest through 2nd and if we travel back from Sunny San Diego that's where they spend most of their time. It's a nice little community, but very small. The boys had less than 40 kids per grade as I recall. Not sure if that's changed much, there were some homes built, but not that many (been gone 5 years now).
If I moved back I'd probably relocate to North Jackson so the kids could play football and baseball as Lordstown seems to be more of a track town and sometimes has trouble putting together enough kids for a baseball team and football, forget it. Just not enough kids.
Jackson-Milton also has a brand new school either up or going up I can't remember. I prefer a town or school like J-M or Western Reserve which South Range recommended. The kids get to experience a lot more if they take advantage of it. Newton Falls is also close as is Mineral Ridge (Weathersfield Twp.).

Thank you much for the recommendations. I'll probably be out that way within the next couple of weeks to looks for a house to rent or purchase. Having the type of information in hand while visiting will prove very helpful. Thanks again.
