Thank you cortlandgirl79 I can't say thank you enough because you aren't just giving me facts but you are letting me into what its really like to live in Ohio and all I can say is its the lifestyle I have been dreaming about ever since I moved back to Florida to take care of my mom. It seems like December can't get here fast enough. Is the 79 your birth year? If so I was born in 79 also. I just thought that was cool

Like I said I can't thank you enough for all the info you have given us. I have requested a relocation packet from Youngstown and I am also going to request ones from Warren, Canton, Cortland, and Akron to help pinpoint where exactly we want to move to. We have been looking on Craigslist.com at rental properties in those area's. We have a new montra in our house " just 6 more months". We are all excited about the move and have been getting ready by going through our stuff and deciding what we want to keep and take with us what we want to sell and what we want to throw away. So I hope that I can keep communicating with you. I would like very much if we could become pin-pals.

Thanks again,
Stephanie

Default Me too!

Hi Stephanie and Terry,

We moved to Boardman from Iowa, so we have been getting acquainted in the community. There are lots of nice restaurants and cultural events, since we have Youngstown State University right here. There is also a new community college opening up soon, and we have several other smaller colleges which help to re-train adults, and train for specific careers.

You can get a fabulous house for the money here. My advice is to take your time and really look around, because the market is swamped, and you'll be able to find just what you want. People are so desperate to sell you can probably offer a lot less than they are asking and still negotiate a price that will knock your socks off. Make sure you check with locals as to which neighborhoods are keeping their value and which are safe.

Boardman Schools are excellent, as are those in several of the surrounding communities.

Traffic is a bit fast compared to Iowa, but I guess you are used to that in Florida.

I'd be happy to help you in any way. I teach part-time and also have a business that I run from my home, and am always looking for some smart people who have integrity and good work ethic.

The winters are really not bad in Ohio compared to Iowa. As long as you have a nice warm home and your family close by, you can be very comfortable. We moved here to be close to our grandchildren, and it has been a good decision all around.

Wishing you the best!

Coolteacher

Hi Coolteacher, welcome to the Valley! How long have you been living here? I'm always interested to hear an outsider's prespective on our area and i'm glad you like it so far.

I'm a native that's looking to stay in the Mahoning Valley when i graduate in December. I really love the history of our area, as well as all the neat festivals and cultural events that we have here. I hope you will continue to enjoy the area and take advantage of all it has to offer.

Hi Cortland Girl,
Thanks for the welcome! We've been here almost two years. Are you a student at YSU? You talk about graduating in December. What is your area? I think there is a lot of opportunity as long as you have a career that is needed here. There are a lot of neat things going on at YSU. We've been reaching out to the foreign students and it's really fun.
I'll check back tomorrow and see if you or Stephanie have posted.
Goodnite.

Goodnite.

You're very welcome! When i graduate my degree will be a bachelor's of business management.

Actually, right now i go to Kent Trumbull, but when i started school in 1997 it was at YSU. After two years of going to school full-time i got hired at Delphi Packard and worked there for several years until we were offered buyouts and retirements a couple of years ago. When i decided to go back to school i transfered to Kent Trumbull because it was a lot closer to home and the advisor's at YSU's business school weren't very understanding when it came to me having a full-time job.

I always knew i wanted to stay around here so i thought Business Administration would be my best bet considering i can do almost anything with it. I used to want to be an engineer a long time ago, but that was just way too much math and science for me. When i was at Delphi i did get to work in the engineering field for a couple years as a technician at Delphi's test facility. Because most of Packard's engineering was/is located in Warren i got to perform electrical tests on many new products that were being developed, in addition to many of our wires, terminals, and components and those of our competitors.

One of my favorite parts of working there was getting to interact with some of our foreign engineers when they came over. I ended up meeting engineers from Germany, Poland, and China and on weekends we would take them to places like Stan Hywet in Akron, the Rock Hall, Browns/Indians games, etc.

What exactly do you do w/the foreign students? It's always interesting getting to know someone from a different culture.

I'm not really sure what happened to Stephanie, i see she hasn't been active on here for a while. Some people come here and ask a couple of questions, then they are never heard from again. Hopefully, you'll be one of the people who sticks around! Have a great weekend.

Hi Cortland Girl,
Sorry, I've been away today after all. Interesting about your life. I live in the Applewood area and my daughter lives in the Historic area. I'm close to the stores and that's really handy. My husband is an engineer and has had a hard time finding good work here. That has really been our only problem. He is working but it's not what we know he can do. Jobs aren't really in abundance, unless you like driving truck, or you are a nurse. Then it's a shoe-in.
In regards to the foreign students, we visited their dorm room for a meal they cooked, they came here a few times, as we like to cook their kind of food, and we've done a few other activities. Haven't gone to any games, but don't really know any of the teams, nor are we really into sports, to be honest.
I will try to come here every day and see what's happening. I know I can learn a lot from all of you who have lived here longer than I.
I also wish you a great weekend.

I know what you mean about the job situation around here. I think engineering is a problem because 1) not a lot of businesses around here need them, and 2) we have no shortage of experienced engineers around here thanks to Delphi. I'm sure Delphi had at least a couple thousand engineers before the bankruptcy. You should have seen them all jumping ship and leaving for greener pastures. I even work with a few retired engineers where i work and i know a couple of them also substitute teach.

Sounds like you and your husband are having a great time dispite the lack of work for him. I'm sure the university and the students really appreciate what you are doing.

Oh yes, and keep coming back to city-data. If you have any questions about anything i'm sure myself and others will do our best to help.
