salem ohio??
I am currently thinking of moving from new mexico to salem ohio, I have grown tired of the desert. Looking to slow down and enjoy life. Anyone have any thoughts on Salem? I am from Albuquerque and have lived in small towns before (loved them). Kids are grown. no need for the hustle and bustle.

I have a Salem address, but live a few miles outside of town. We do most of our shopping in Salem. Going to Salem is like driving back to 1950. Huge 100 year old houses, with big shade trees line the main drag through town. The East end of town is where the Wal-Mart, Home Depot, and shopping plazas are located. The Salem Hospital is on both sides of the main street, with a glass bridge connecting the two buildings.
The rest of Salem consists of many blocks of residential area. They surround two really nice parks. There are sidewalks everywhere. You can walk the streets any time of day or night. Nobody will ever bother you.
The Salem Morning Journal publishes the police reports every day. You will see domestics, kids playing in the street, occasional vandalism, and a few drunks that needed a ride home. I don't think there's any real crime to speak of. Morning Journal News
I was driving through town today. I noticed quite a few houses for sale. They are older on small city lots. I believe they are going from 80k to about 120k. Salem would be a quiet retirement city.

thank you for your reply.. I went there to visit this spring and it felt like home (of course that is how I end up in New Mexico, went on vacation and stayed) not quite retired yet, early 50's. Much in the way of jobs? I have a stress job now. And am wanting to jump ship.

I couldn't really say about jobs. I work in Pittsburgh. I suppose it depends on what you want to do.

West Salem is over by Mansfield. That's about a hundred miles from Salem.
Salem, Ohio Columbiana County 44460
Which one did the original poster visit?

I visit Salem quite frequently. My elderly Grandma lives there. Downtown and the more upscale parts of town are very nice and quiet. But I'd avoid the worse parts of town (back streets especially) My Grandma lives on sort of an alley on the outskirts of Salem. We've seen surprising crime rates in the last few years.

i grew up in salem and it use to be the kind of town you could walk around the streets at night and not worry. and still is in a way compared to bigger cities but now i agree with this poster that some parts are kind of scary but over all i still think its a cute lil town and quite nice in the down town part and i love the old house!

I dont mean to hijack this thread, but just wanted to point out something interesting: There used to be TWO Salem Ohio's, at the same time...the existing town, and then there was another Salem Ohio, in western Ohio outside of Dayton...I believe the post office made one of them change their name, and the second town is now called Clayton, Ohio.
In Dayton, there is a major street named Salem Avenue (State Route 48); it was named as such because this street used to run from Dayton's CBD out to Salem; this street is a legacy of that town's old name.
