With Indianapolis:

The reason I placed it where I did, is that because of almost any city in the U.S., you will notice a drop off in strength of the original local accent. The further you go into rural metro areas, the more relaxed the speech patterns become. Indy is surrounded by nothing and I think this affects its accent.
Im saying that IMO Indianapolis accents are more northern than Cincinnati, and maybe Dayton also.

I would put it right behind Columbus or possibly behind or next to Dayton on your list.

You are right on about speech relaxing as one leaves the big cities, IMO, Cincy-Rise. I've noticed a faster-talking speech in all of the large metro areas I've been to. As one gets away from the big cities, folks tend to get a little more mellow, and the speech slows down with the rest of life. The regional sounds stay very much intact, though, and become more enjoyable to take in.

A good example of this is the late Jimmy Stewart. Good old Uncle Jim grew up in a small town in Western PA, about 60 miles Northeast of Pittsburgh. He had a more mellow delivery than most Pittsburghers, but still spoke like a Western Pennsylvanian.

I did place Dayton ahead of Cincy as far as it's accent has a more "northern" influence.

As someone that used to live in the mid-south, I will be the first to tell you that the southern influence is extremely easy to pick up on, it's the "lazy language" ... one's tongue and mouth movements do not need to work as hard to pronounce words. I can see that from your standpoint, "hey, Cincinnati is right on the river, Indy is kind of more in the middle of the state," but you would assume that Cincinnati influences NOKY, not the other way around. Cincinnati has 4 - 1 million metros within a 100 miles, and a 5th metro with half a million people. Even Louisville resembles the midwest more so than the south. This can be attributed to its early river/industrial/European beginnings. Indianapolis is right in the middle of nowhere, surrounded by farmland... You do know that we're an hour away, right?

No, I mean that I would possibly put Indianapolis as more Northern sounding than Dayton also. If not that, then right next to it or below it.

I think Cleveland is like the North East, having lived in both. Columbus is midwest, and Cinci is midwest mixed with the south.

Now when it comes to accents. Once again I'll post my views, because I'm not from Ohio. Cleveland has the typical "news" accents. Seems like a little bit of the northern accent as well - with the Mom sounding like "Mahm" if that sense. Columbus is similar to Pittsburgh overall. Cinci has a mix. Some people have relatively no accent aka Cleveland's accent, while others sound like they are from the south.

What is all this talk about Metros within 100 miles? Lmao. Cleveland has Toledo, Detroit, Pittsburgh, Akron, Canton, Erie, Columbus, etc all close by too. These are irrelevant conversations when it comes to is Ohio "Northeast" or any talk about accents.
