Well, that's a first. Damn my elementary school geography teachers! They've had me believing this lie all the damned time. Along with the Census Bureau!

It's a conspiracy. C-O-N-spiracy.

Trust me, Buffalo and Rochester are much more like Cleveland than Columbus or Cincinnati.
I definetly notice the family resemblance.

THought it's considerably to the west I'd add Milwaukee to that list.

Dude, this whole thread is about perception, not the census. It's cultural associations.

Yes if you go by the book, your pointless geographical location definitions are right. But how much do those really tell you? I would also argue that the census definitions and geography terms are not good.

You could also at least cite the census itself. Not wikipedia.

I've just never heard of a definition of the Northeast that excludes New York and Philadelphia. And I've never heard of a definition of the Midwest that excludes Cleveland.

I think the popular perception of regions (the "West" notwithstanding) largely coincides with the Census bureau's designations.

Are you willing to listen to voices from not New York/Philly or what? Why are you posting on the Ohio forum if you just tell me I'm wrong? I just gave you my perception.

I said I don't consider them "north" so much because they are not even as far north as Cleveland, my hometown/natural perspective from which I view the rest of the country.

LOL...Cleveland is literally on the northern border of the country. Not a very good base for determining what's north or not.

Please. It's the southernmost northern border in the country. Look at a map.

Cities north of Cleveland: Chicago, Boston, Minneapolis, Detroit, Rochester, Buffalo, Milwaukee, Portland, Seattle.

I'm not talking about directly north. That's a lake. I'm talking about latitude.

Well I guess you can use this term:
Mid-Atlantic states - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

I totally didn't realize West Virginia fell into that category.

I've always thought Midwest. But I live in Southwestern Ohio and haven't spent much time in Northeastern. Been to Cleveland once, just for fun over Labor Day weekend. Super nice people I met!

I'm right there with you, Jimmy. I do not consider NE OHIO Midwest. The rest of Ohio is a toss up, but a good mix. NE Ohio is completely different than anything in Indiana let alone places like Iowa, Missouri, or Kansas. Farmland? I have seen more boring farmland in SE Pennsylvania where i have family over by York. The Midwest is such a broad term. Great Lakes would fit perfectly for Ohio. This poster has some weird fascination with Ohio's location. They have made several threads about it.
