Looking at Steubenville area to call home
My Husband has a couple Job oppertunties in Steubenville and I have a Couple Questions
1 We have 4 children so the schools have to be decent are they?
2 With the bad wrap going around about Steubenville were is a safe place to live.?
3 Would you recommend the move or not please list reasons ?
4 I am a lpn would I have a problem finding employment?
5 Is there any good child care places around that you would trust with your own kids?
6 I know that there is not a drug free city on the planet. I really dont want my kids seeing dealers on the corners and such is this possible?
We both dont mind a Little commute with gas prices going through the roof. I just dont want to move into a crime ridden dumpy town city. I would really like a place were my kids can outside and play. I really dont want to have to worry about them although all mothers do. I am kinda looking for mayberry. Is there a place like that within about a 20 mile commute?

It has very good schools, the catholic school system is very, very nice. Even if you are not catholic it's a good school. The public schools are good as well. There are 2 hospitals in steubenville. And across the river in WV as well, so that should not be a hard job to come by. Your kids will not be near drug dealers if you move to a decent neighborhood. Reguardless of what you may hear, there are more nice safe neighborhoods than there are bad ones. I wouldn't move to the pleasant heights nerighborhood, or the labelle neighborhood, or downtown. Once you come up the hill from downtown and get on flat land you are good to go. Good luck.

I don't know about Mayberry, but you could check out nearby Wintersville or Toronto which are a little smaller but right by Steubenville. Since you posted back in July though, you may have already moved or decided against it.

The small towns nearby are about as close as you're gonna get these days to Mayberry. Toronto is nice, as is Stratton. Both are river towns just a little North of Steubenville. Any of the little towns in the area fit what you're looking for really well. I'd avoid living in Steubenville proper or sending your kids to school there, when there are so many nice little towns to choose from that are so quiet.
Steubenville, in the city, is basically a smaller city with some big city problems. It is no worse than the bad parts of Akron or Canton, and certainly not as bad as Youngstown. It stands out from nearby towns, though, where things are very quiet. Steubenville does have shootings, and does have a very dangerous ghetto which is like a miniature Pittsburgh hill district. I think Steubenville takes folks by surprise with this.

I was born, raised and Retired in Steubenville.
The School System is outstanding! We refurbished an elementary School named Garfield. Steubenville HIgh School has gone through a refurbish, with a new gym and swimming pool added, along with upgrades to the entire school!
We have a new elementary School on the John Scott Connector, thats only a year old now.
We have Catholic Schools and a Catholic High School if thats your choice.
We have Jefferson Community College, as well as Franciscan Univerity that is known World Wide!
West end of town is the best place to live, as it has the newest housing around.
The South end of town is a bit blighted, it has the older homes and families that have lived there for generations.
The North end of town has been modernized.
LPN? There are plenty of nursing homes in the area, that employ LPNS, and we have Trinity East and Trinity West Hospital...(West is the only 'functioning hospital', as East is more for rehabilitation).
The crime is mostly located around Pleasant Heights area, as they have gang members reputed to be in that area from the bloods to crypts, and usually in the Summer months, its centered around Maxwell avenue.
The City tries to keep up with delapidated houseing, that if its a blight, or is a danger to others, then they usually tear the house down, or auction it off, and the new owners do what they want, refurbish or tear it down and put something else up.
We have Businesses running from State Route 7, clear to the Wintersville line, on Sunset Blvd. Many Doctors offices for young and old, and plenty of places to eat, and of varying tastes.
There is a lot of things in Steubenville, if you look for them, and get to know your neighbors.
We have churches of all faiths in which to worship, so, you always have an extended family that way!
I love this place, and I Retired here, and will probably end up dying here, but, this is home and I will never leave it.
May the LORD Bless each of you.
I wish you well...
Jesse

I've been driving WV2 (just Ohio river across from Steubenville), a few metallurgical dinosaurs still puffing smoke in the air and it stinks (not much though), must be a coke plant. Russian company, Severstal, bought bunch of metallurgical plants across USA (Boston, Wheeling, Steubenville, Detroit) and they laid off something like 5,000 people already, most never to return. There were big lay offs, plant shutdowns in Steubenville. Hopefully, social security and medicare will pay for lots of lpns. Seems nothing else is going for Steubenville.
