Default What do people in Ohio think about the Great Plains?

Do they see them as their neighbors, or as far-off empty states?

When I lived in Ohio, I viewed them as far-off empty states. That's just me though!

Sorry to say, but i see them as far off empty states that i have no desire to visit. I've seen western Ohio and it's pretty flat and covered in farms.........i'm guessing most of the plains states are too. Granted, there are some cities there that are nice........errrr...........Omaha and some others, but i'm not really interested in anything out that way.

Far off empty states. Ive driven through Kansas and it was pretty empty compared to Ohio...particularly the further west you got.

Ya got that right. Kansas now has more frontier counties with fewer than 7 people per square mile than in 1890.

The Wizard of Oz.

Are they far-off empty states? Not far-off, no. Empty? Yes, inasmuch as I see them as vast, flat farmlands, and boring.

I don't really mean any of that in a bad way. It just is what it is in my mind. To say I see them as neighbors wouldn't be accurate, because they aren't. My neighbors are Michigan, Canada (across Lake Erie), Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Kentucky and Indiana.

I also see the Great Plains as far-off empty states. Kind of middle of nowhere, and I dont really have any desire to go there. I know someone whos been out that way and in Fargo, ND and he urged us never to go there as it was just so plain and boring and said he would never go back.

Ohio is right in the middle of it all. Were the 7th most populous and one of the densest states out there. We are right next to the East Coast and populated midwest states. Anything west of Illinois (or Ohio outside of urban areas) thats in the midwest I have no desire to see what so ever. Even the urban areas out there arent that urban and they are surrounded by farms and nothing. I dont mean to offend anybody but thats just how I view it.

Same here... far off empty states. To touch on what Cle440 was saying, we can be in 5 large cities within about an hours' drive ... So when I visit the Great Plains, I feel like I'm in no man's land. Being flat doesn't help either.

The plains are not in any way connected to Ohio, and I don't see why people always think that they are. We are urbanized and they are not. We also make up the RUST-BELT STATES with Indiana, Illinois, New York, Michigan and Wisconsin, which are a very significant portion of the population of the United States. Even though the Rust Belt isn't the greatest title, it is still who we are, and we are NOT the midwest. Period.

The Plains are not entirely flat. The Flint Hills make up a portion of the eastern 1/3 of Kansas.
