Coming soon: Ohio's first Casino
This november, Ohioans will vote whether or not to allow a land based casino. If this initiative passes, this will be Ohio's first Casino.
The casino is to be built in the same county I have grown up in my entire life. The interesting part about this casino is that it is going to be unlike any other casino in the midwest region. First of all, this is going to be a land based casino. Many casinos in the surrounding states are riverboats and racinos. The casino will also be built in the country away from the city (Cincinnati is about 40 minutes away, Columbus about an hour away). The stretch of land where the casino is going to be built is farmland, and there are not restaurants or hotels within several miles. The casino will not be on an Indian Reservation because there are no Indian Reservations in Ohio, and the state previously refused Indians the opportunity to buy land in Ohio for casino development.
I do not support this casino here in Clinton County, OHIO.
First of all, DHL is moving from Wilmington, Clinton County, Ohio, to Louisville, Kentucky, leaving 10,000 people without jobs in Clinton County and surrounding areas. A LOT of people are going to vote YES for the casino because the casino says it will offer 5,000 new jobs. Yes, the economy in Clinton County is going to be very very hard hit when DHL leaves... but, people are assuming they will get jobs at the casino when that opens. These are false hopes!!! What people do not realize is that the casino is going to offer minimum wage jobs, which is I think 7.45 here in Ohio. If anyone is capable of feeding their family and providing for their family on that type of income, please let me know! It is very hard. Also, the casino is going to bring in a lot of people who have experience working in casinos. Therefore, the jobs that pay the best are going to be given to those people who have already worked in casinos. No one that I know in Clinton County has ever worked in a casino! So, it is very unfortunate and troubling that citizens in Clinton County assume they will get jobs at the casino once DHL packs up and leaves.
Secondly, from what I have read in this blog, these casinos often attract... unwanted visitors. Such as drunk drivers. I was a victim of a drunk driving accident and there is nothing I hate more than someone who threatens the life of others because they choose to drink and drive. Also, there are no strip clubs around this area, so I assume someone will get the bright idea to bring a strip club to the area.
The list of negative possibilities goes on and on.
I can't help but feel like LAKES ENTERTAINMENT INC, who is building the casino here, is trying to sneak in and take advantage of our community. They promise jobs but they will pay nothing more than minimum wage. They promise to boost the economy here - but the revenue from the casino is going to be distributed throughout Ohio's 88 counties based on population.
This whole casino idea seems like a big machine to me: ready to gobble everything up and ruin the reputation of the area.
The odds are we'll have a casino after we tally up the votes in November. I hope not. If you want to gamble, just go to one of the hundreds of casinos already built.

Why Clinton County of all places? Not that I care but I have been through there before, all I saw was a gas station and that's it, do people actually live in that county?

I'm not from Ohio but moving very shortly... Casino brining drunk drivers, come on now? What about the Bars, Clubs and beer already in the fridge. Casinos and Bars don't bring drunk drivers; stupid people are drunk drivers.
As far as the jobs go - They will more likely relocate just about 100 people for the new casino if that, this leaves 4,900 jobs.
The minimum wage thing this is far from the truth.
Table Dealers
Pit Bosses
Account Managers
Service Techs
A long with anyone around money.
Will make more then minimum wage... They keep these people happy so they don't have the urge to steal.

Im voting yes for casinos for Ohio, but only if they put them in urban areas. I would prefer putting them in Cleveland as it has many advantages. I like the plan they had a few years ago with putting 3 or so around Cleveland and I think they had 2 more for other areas of the state. I have no idea why they would put them in Clinton County...good luck on that.

a) cheap land
b) interstate access and visibility
c) short driving distance from half a dozen major metro areas
d) nearby outlet mall already a draw
What I don't see is the public demand. You may build it, but they may not come. Cincinnati, Lexington, Louisville and Indy are closer to the riverboats in Indiana, Cleveland has Windsor and Niagara Falls casinos within a similar distance, as well as slots in Erie, and there are casinos in West Virginia, too, if I'm not mistaken.

-Have to agree with that though. I couldn't tell you how great it would be if Dayton's arcade became a casino, or for that matter, how great it would be if casinos moved into historic, large buildings in many of our state's cities. Unfortunately another loss for the suburbs, but hey, we're on the right track.

Hamilton County voted in favor of the casinos and you can bet that Cincinnati did.

where do you get that casinos bring min. wage jobs? this is a building that will need people to maintain it fix leaks, remodel etc.
it will bring rest.,motels, plenty of taxes to clinton county, to stop the strip clubs have your county reps. vote zoning laws to out law stripping. why is the glass always half full in ohio?
I am glad to see casinos coming to ohio keep ohio's money here!
what I would like to see is in central ohio build a city from scratch that would rival las vegas, with 10 casinos min. and only business that would support the casinos.
being in central ohio it would give easy access to the population and basicly employ ohio workers due to the commute.
if this city was created I feel it would steal people from both atlantic city and las vegas.
