Default Question about West Portsmouth

If anyone is familiar with the Portsmouth area, can you tell me if West Portsmouth is built in the remains of an ancient impact crater?

I imagine that sounds strange but when looking at a map of Ohio a few weeks back, I noticed the following quite by accident and I can't find any other topographical feature like it in the region. It just seems out of place - as if a meteor hit there at some point.

I'd lived and worked near there for years. What's interesting is that less than 40 miles northeast is the serpent mound crater, which is where the famous prehistoric Serpent Mound was built. Check the map.

That does look very interesting, the map you have there, but there may be explanations regarding the water in the area. This is a pretty big confuence of what were pre-dam shallow rivers, which often flood, teh Scioto River coming into the Ohio River. I wish I knew a geologist who could tell you more.

Thanks for the response.

It just seems odd that the ridge line to the north and west of that part of town forms a semi-circle. The rest of the surrounding terrain is typical random hills and valleys of Southern Ohio.

Hopefully you look at this. But West Portsmouth the area where the streets are, are not as flat as the picture depicts. It is a very hilly area and most of the West Portsmouth area is hillside. It was built on the foot of a very tall hill and it is a rolling hill and has its flat areas. Hope this helps you out. It is not a crater nor flat the area along the Scioto River is a flat flood plain which is farmed every year all along the Scioto River is farmland and it is a great place to be excellent white-tail deer hunting as well as turkey. Pike County is also a good place to white-tail deer hunt I'm not sure as to the turkey hunting there never done so.
