Default Moving North

Hello All,
I am am new to the forum and would like to get to know everyone. My husband will be transferred to Lucas County sometime this summer and we are curious about the area. We will be in the market for a home and would appreciate any input you guys have to offer. We prefer the suburbs to the city but want to be close enough to get there if we want to. I was thinking of either Maumee or Ottawa Hills. We do not have children so schools are not an issue. However, we want to live in a safe, clean, friendly community. Also, I understand Ohio has some snow skiing. Would anyone like to elaborate?????? I know your winters are freeeeezing but how are the summers?
Thanks for any suggestions you may have.

I'm from Columbus but I have some family in Toledo. Personally, I don't like Toledo much, but that aside I can try to give you a little information. My aunt owns a beautiful home with a lot of property in Monclova. It is still a little rural there although housing developments are starting to move in. I also know a few people from Perrysburg and Sylvania which I think are also nice suburbs. You might want a Toledo resident's opinion on that though.

As for the weather, depending on where you are moving from I guess you could say the winters are freezing, but I'm pretty used to them. Mostly winters are bad because it is overcast almost everyday. Spring and fall are nice, but summer is hot and humid and Toledo gets lots of mosquitos. They used to call it the Black Swamp I believe.

I live in Lucas county, the city of Toledo

I would suggest Maumee, Perrysburg, or Springfield township.Ottawa Hills is expensive but if you have the moneny, go for it. The summers in Ohio are very comfortable but the winters can get brutal and will catch you off guard so be prepared. Scientist on global warming states winters here will get harsher but at the same become shorter. It normally gets cold in November but it didnt really get cold this year until early January, but when it got cold it got reeeeeally cold.

I remember going skiing some place in Ohio when I was really young, but I have no memory on exactly where I was at the time. Maybe someone else can help you on that one. You will be near the largest amusement park in the world in Sandusky. The largest waterpark resort in the world is also about to be built there. I think you will enjoy the move to Ohio.

I agree with what others have said. I think Maumee and Perrysburg are nice places to live. I never really felt the need to travel to Toledo while I was there, but some friends would head there for a change in scenery. The summers are very hot and humid. There is quite a big mosquito problem some summers. Winters are cold and we tend to get hit with a huge snow storm at least once a winter.

Hi, I am in Toledo and have lived nere for over 20 years, lets see if I can help. Maumee is really nice but land locked making land expensive. Not to say that you cant get really nice real estate, it's just difficult to find reasonably priced land to build on or own more than 2 acres. Neighboring Maumee is Monclova, Whitehouse, and Waterville. All are also great areas. Those that want land and have a desire to build head out to these burbs. They all also share the same schools. Ottawa Hills has a nationally ranked school system which is why the property taxes are just astronomical. You also have to be aware of your surroundings in Ottawa Hills, some really nice neighborhoods are not very far from some less-desireable neighborhoods. Also, the Ottawa Hills police department has become suspect to the public for hiring racist officers. I know the Chief and he is a stand-up guy, but you may want to investigate these stories so that you know where you stand with Toledoans. Other burbs are Perrysburg (Wood County) which I dont recommend not because of any other reason than the local hospital just doesn't have the resources to compete against any of the hospitals in Lucas county. Sylvania is a no-lose option. Taxes are realistic and well spent and property ranges from small town atmosphere to large rural expansion. Lastly is the East side, Oregon has come along way...Anyone who lives on the East side of the river will be scrutinized by the westerners. The immediate East side is trashy and used to be a gang haven so I'm guess thats where the scrutinity originated from. I like Oregon though, there's room to grow, it's safe, clean and is becoming a contender with the other burbs. I guess I would rank Ottawa Hills at the bottom of my list followed by Perrysburg, then Oregon, and really the rest just clump together all with different plusses and minuses. If there is anything specific I may have missed, please respond and I'll do my best. Later I'll give you a list of "must see" attractions right here in Toledo. Good Luck!!
