Hi there
I lived in Warren for too long . My son still lives there, and warren is no
place to raise two kids. the schools are bad, there is no work there and
there are drugs everywhere. Its a very depressed city. I dont recommend it.

Washington St. used to be one of the prettiest streets in town.........lots of big old homes. If you've done any research on Warren you will know that the city has seen better days. The city has lost almost all of its industry and around 25k people in the last 30 years. It's almost like a mini-Youngstown in someways, only i think the violent crime in Y-town is much worse. In Warren there are pockets of crime and you can bet about 95% of it is drug related.
There are very nice neighborhoods, good neighborhoods, decent neighborhoods, ok areas, and bad bad areas that i would consider pretty ghetto. To me Washington St. has some ok areas and some bordering on bad. In the vicinity Washington (which we consider the North End) there are mostly rental properties. With the rental properties you get a lot of white and black trash, drug dealers, etc. There are also some old timers that have refused to leave, but they are becoming fewer and farther between.
I looked up the 100 block and i hate to tell you that it isn't the best area. http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&sour...,0.019312&z=16
The 100 block is the block right before N. Park, which i consider a very questionable area. It is known around town that there are prostitutes in the area of Washington, N. Park and Atlantic St. Now not all of Atlantic is bad, east of Elm Rd. is pretty nice, but between Elm and N. Park is a very questionable area. If the home was on Washington near Mahoning Ave. i would consider that an ok location. There you would be close to a nursing home, assisted living facility, the Warren Library and Perkins Park. It's still the North End, but it's an ok area in my mind. Also, if it was close to Elm Rd. i wouldn't consider it terrible, but definitely rundown looking and there probably would be some shady characters walking around. To be honest i would feel a little scared being a single female living where your home is. Now do i think you would get shot randomly living there? No, not at all. I think if you mind your own business and keep to yourself you will be fine. On the corner of N. Park and Washington there is a Circle K convenient store and i see Warren cops there all the time getting coffee. I'm not sure i would feel safe going in there though. Maybe it's just the suburban small town girl in me, but i would rather be safe than sorry.
Are you planning on living in this house or using it as a rental???
Like i said, there is crime in the area, i would make sure to lock my doors and maybe get a security system. My friend's 70 year old mother lives on Fairfield a block or two away from Washington and it's an ok area, i'm not scared there, but it is definitely run down and the whole block is rentals other than her mother. There are also a lot of kids playing in the streets with little to no parental supervision. I think drugs and lack of parenting and responsibility is the biggest issue living in certain areas of Warren. They city also averages about 5-6 murders/year almost all either domestic or drug related in nature. We did have one murder last year that was a robbery gone bad at a diner on N. Park. The killer was from Youngstown and while trying to rob the place the 90+ year old owner and his son fought back on the older gentleman was killed. Most homicides occur on the west side of town and in a small portion of the SE side located between St. Rt. 169 (Niles Rd.) and 422 (Youngstown Rd.) In fact, there was a drug related drive-by double homicide a week ago on Wick SE which is in this area.
As for ethnicity, Warren is basically black and white. About 71% white and 25% black according to city-data. There are also a lot of Greeks and Italians in the area which makes for lots of great food and outstanding none-chain restaurants. During the summer the Courthouse Square area hosts an African American and Italian festival, both great. The Amphitheater has live outdoor concerts and free movie nights. There is also a Greek festival every year on the St. Demetrios Community Center grounds which are located on Atlantic St NE.
As for schools, many suburbanites will tell you that the Warren City Schools are horrendous. I beg to differ. I grew up in one of these suburban communities and many of my friends have since left and moved into Warren. I know at least 3 girls from high school that all send their kids to Warren schools. I'm not sure which elementary school your address would serve, but all of my g/f's send there kids to Lincoln on the NE side. Warren is in the process of getting all new, state-of-the-art schools. All of the new elementary schools are K-8th grade and they do a good job of keeping the older kids separate from the younger kids. My girlfriends are all very happy with school, the teachers and the education their kids are getting. The only bad thing they notice is a lack of parental participation. When we were growing up in the suburbs all the moms and even some dads wanted to help out, not so much in Warren.
I think that's enough for now. If you have anymore questions please feel free to ask. I really do enjoy helping people on this board. Have a great day!

Hello! I've lived in both Mahoning County (Youngstown) and Trumbull (Warren/Niles). Of the counties, here are the only places (in my snobby opinion to live):
Trumbull = Howland, zip 44484
Mahoning = Poland, zip 44514 and Canfield, zip 44406.
Those are the upper-class neighborhoods. There are other blue collar ones that are nice too, but if you want the BEST, those are them and there are still GREAT deals on homes there! Just be sure that even if you search within those zips, that the home you find is for the corresponding school system. There will be a few with, for example, a Poland zip code but Struthers schools.
Feel free to PM me if you have any questions!
Jenn :O)

There are plenty of other nice places to live in both counties. I grew up in Cortland which is also a very desirable area.
The most recent poster asked about Warren because they bought a home there already, that is what i was replying to.

Good luck on your move! Be sure to let us know how you like your house, Washington St., Warren and Ohio in general. I hope you like it, but don't be surprised if you see some shady characters in your area (ie, prostitutes, etc.) Welcome to Warren.
