Anyone know how the Mt. Gilead Schools are? Is this a nice area for a family with 2 kids to live? If anyone has any other info please share Thanks!

Typical rural schools. Mt Gilead is starting to get some Columbus-area commuters, so it's not entirely self-contained anymore. It's not a bad looking town, and you don't have to go out of town for everything (they have a good-sized Kroger store). As Morrow County goes I would rate it ahead of Cardington & Marengo, although it really depends on what you're looking for.

Columbus is close to the south, just get on 71...Marion is close to the north if you want the smaller "City". My brother-in-law has lived in Marengo for 30+ years and really likes the small town area with the closeness to the big city. I wouldn't say you are completely isolated from the things that happen in the city schools, it is just that with fewer kids, there is less likelihood for some of the problems. There is a good chance that many of the teachers would get to know who your kids are, even if they don't have them in class.

I was raised in Mt.Gilead....I loved it...I had often wished I could've returned to raise my child there as it was a memory I have often longed to return to......but,I then realized that "this" town is his "Mt.Gilead" and it depends what you put into your children.......But all in all...It was a lovely place to grow up...I'm just so very sorry Main street isn't the same anymore..but am glad to know the "capitol theatre" still exists...and whiston's pharmacy....and weihe's true value.....and that there's still a restaurant where the old copper kettle was(and before that the melody inn) but I don't know the name now of the old "peoples'bank" loved to play on the premises of the courthouse...with the buckeyes dropping from the trees...whetstone creek and the state lakes were my stomping grounds.Have I answered your question?? Hope so....

Mt. Gilead is a cute little town full of kind people. My brother went to school there, and built life-long friendships. If you want to know how the schools measure up compared to others, see if they have a website or call to ask for their scores.

My parents recently relocated & moved my sister there - she was in a suburb of Columbus nice school system & her 5th grade math there was equivalent to her 6th grade math class at Northmor in Mount Gilead - She loves the school and the area now that she has adjusted however it seems as if they do not push their students as intensely as they do in certain schools

The Truth about Mt Gilead??
Wow I didn't think anyone would ask. LOL Mt. Gilead is a great town. The crime is low. People are nice. The weather is very cold and you have alot of ice and snow but in Mt gilead they keep the roads plowed and salted. The biggest drawback is that they are no good jobs there period. You may have to commute to Marion or Mansfield. Or even Columbus(50 miles away). Overall great place to raise a family. I agree Mt gilead is way better than Cardington or Marengo.

I've lived in Ohio nearly 40 years, about half of it in Morrow County (Mount Gilead).
The biggest pros are a complete lack of traffic, beautiful autumns and generally low crime. A lot of people feel comfortable leaving their homes and cars unlocked. One caveat on the issue of crime is that there are an unusually high number of registered sex offenders living throughout the county and this has been true over the last few decades. For current stats, check with the local detective assigned to investigate sex crimes at the sheriff's department.
Some of the cons are a poor economy as a result of poor economic planning, lack of diversity and nearly nothing for children or youth. Morrow County voters are tight-fisted when it comes to supporting school levies and MR/DD services, especially the latter. In 2007, the county was dead last in the state for the amount of local funding for MR/DD and there is no Early Intervention program. Residents must travel out of county for E.I. services.
In Mount Gilead, students must pay to participate in school athletics ($200 for one sport at high school) and the curriculum has been reduced due to budget constraints. Spanish is the only foreign language offered (this may be true for the three other public districts; Cardington, Highland and Northmor) and there is no industrial arts program.
In my opinion, there are a number of local public officials who would not hold their positions if they lived in other communities. After living here for nearly two decades, I'm getting out next month and look forward to living somewhere with a stronger sense of community and professionalism.
