Ohio is purple, it reflects the nation as a true bellweather. I have little doubt that within 5-10 years it will be voting for Republicans again, probably a year or two before the rest of the country catches on.

As you can see in that map, almost all the rural counties in Ohio voted for McCain (Republican). The only area that was mostly Obama (Democratic) votes was NE Ohio, with 10 counties voting for Obama. SW had only 2, SE had 3, NW had 5, and Central had only 1.

This IS a round planet, after all, and we're about out of the fossil fuel energy that we've taken for granted for so long.
Americans must demand urgent alternative energy development and infrastructure renewal as the bedrock for a new economy, and the Democratic Party seems to be a more open, viable vehicle for this kind of movement. The Republican Party, unfortunately, has increasingly become the closed, exclusive party of Christian, racist and homophobic fundamentalism, of the sort that cares much more about what two people do in their bedroom than about whether or not there is even the energy in a few years' time to keep the lights on.

How did it happend?
a) Ohios economy was (& is ) in the tank and a lot people actually voted on the economy
b) Obama was black so this gauranteed a big turnout in the black community
c) Obama had an excellent grass roots organization that managed to pump-up turnout, meaning that Obama lost a lot of those red counties, but didnt lose them as bad as Kerry or Gore did. Add this close margin to the big wins Obama racked up in the urban areas suffering job loss and it was clear he won the election.
The only anomaly here is that he lost Appalachian Ohio, which usually goes for the Dem in hard times.

I think a lot of the counties that McCain won, he won by a small majority (like Richland County, it was very close. I think Mansfield itself went for Obama, but the rest of the metro and of the county went McCain). Another thing, the places that went Obama, tend to have a large concentration of people; that large concentration of people out numbers many counties.
