Default Info on Marietta

Can anyone tell me whether Marietta would be a could place to retire; i.e., how are the home prices, utility bills, doctors, etc.? ANY information about the city would be appreciated.

I am also somewhat concerned about the state income tax and whether that would make Ohio too expensive for my wife and I to live there on a fixed income. If anyone could shed light on how the taxing system works, it would really be helpful.

Thanks!

Default Marietta

Here are a couple of links that may help.

Marietta/Washington County Convention and Visitors Bureau

MariettaOhio.info - Marietta Ohio's hometown web site since 1999

Good luck!

George Washington himself said he knew of no better place to settle down!

I grew up in/around Marietta and often wish I could return. The reason I, and so many others out here, can't/don't is because of the lack of employment opportunities in the area that extend beyond factory work. If you're retiring and employment isn't a factor, then I can sincerely recommend it. There are 4 distinct seasons, lots of history to enjoy, lots of events hosted downtown by the city, a friendly atmosphere, and so much more.

I live in Sumter, SC now and everyone seems to refer to it as one of the cheapest places in the US to live. Let me just tell you that even so, it's still 2-2.5 times higher than what it cost us to live in Marietta. The Mid-Ohio Valley really is one of the cheapest places to live.

If you jump across the river to Williamstown/Parkersburg, WV then real estate will be much cheaper but property taxes are slightly higher.

I can't help you out on taxes, but I do want to point out that Marietta is the location of a small college, aptly names Marietta College. Make sure you check the housing areas out thoroughly and don't end up near noisy college kids!

I recall the town as very beautiful and quaint, right next to the river. Here's a website I found that may help also, hopefully it's not the same one as posted above: City of Marietta, Ohio

I can't help you much with the information that you're looking for, but I just wanted to share that I have a love affair with Marietta! I grew up in Green, Ohio but have family all over WV. Every time we went to WV, we would always be sure to stop in Marietta. I love everything about the town & if I could, I would be teaching there instead of SC! The history is amazing, the houses are beautiful & unique, everyone always seems so friendly... I just can't say enough about how much I love it! Every time we would go (even now when we go home to Ohio or back to SC) we always stop at the hot dog stand down past Burger King. Fried Cauliflower & a coney dog!! I just get excited when I think about it!! & I love walking across the railroad bridge & going to the flood water polls. Ahhh.... Marietta

Marietta is a great little town. The cost of living is fairly low. Little crime and through the summer months there are many things going on. River Roar which is a speed boat race weekend. The Sternwheel Festival always draws thousands. You can't beat the fireworks. Downtown is kept up very nicely and quaint. Antique shops and small locally owned shops. There is a very nice bike trail for exercise. Plenty of nice places to eat. Catch a College baseball or football game (without the crowds of the big name schools). Or drop me a message and I'll show you around Williamstown WV (right across the river). We can take the tour in 10 minutes. Small town and the mayor would personally welcome you.

That's not going to be a problem. There are no real housing options near campus. I suppose it's possible to get close to a fraternity/sorority house if one were to buy on the southern end of 5th/6th street.
