My guess is that Boettler is a German name and was originally written Böttler. Could that be possible? The umlaut (two dots over the "o" means there's an "e" afterwards. I'm guessing many Ohioans already know that, given our large German connection)

I knew that and I'm not German. All those years in Cincinnati and I learned a little something about the German language. Never learned to cuss in German, though. Dang.

I don't think that many people from our town know that. Interesting fact though. Many pronounce it wrong. My mom went to school with the Boettlers when she was little & said that the boy would beat up the other kids when they'd call him Bot-ler! So she corrects everyone. Ha ha.

The city of Massillon was named after Jean Baptiste Massillon, Bishop of Cleremont. ( http://www.massillonohio.com/hist.html) So, it should be pronounced Mass-ee-yon. (the "on" rhymes with the French "garcon") But, when I say it, it usually sounds like Mass-lun.

If you watch the movie, Go Tigers! about the Massillon Washington Football team all the cheerleaders yell Mass-lun, the way you do. I call it Mass-il-lin.

Well, that's just fascinating about Massillon! I didn't know that. I grew up on Massillon Road. It was hard enough trying to get people to spell it right... I couldn't imagine trying to get them to say it correctly! Ha ha.
