out of the cities you mentioned, only new orleans exceeded hamilton. big city crime, small-town murders.

The cities mentioned were more referenced for murder rate, not overall crime rate.
Yeah, the link probably did not add much. It's pretty general information. I would add though, while Hamilton does have a fairly low murder rate, it's violent crime numbers seem high. I'm willing to bet a great deal of this is contributed to domestic violence acts. But again...that's just an educated guess based on the lovies populating the area.

City compare is an ok site. It's level or point basis is pretty basic and doesn't really show much. And no New Orleans isn't the only one higher than Hamilton. Quite a few cities had higher violent crime, etc. I just did random cities like Detroit, Youngstown, and Compton, all exceeded in violent crime.

Haha true.. I just don't see how Hamilton is on the same level in terms of violent crime with the likes of Cincy, Cleveland, Detroit, etc.. ya know?

I hear many good things about Minneapolis on City-Data.com. Yet, they score 8's in both violent and property crime--just like Detroit. Youngstown, at least, scored a 7 in property crime. If our murder rate wasn't so high, I wonder how much lower our violent crime number would be?
For comparisons, I like this site better: Moderator cut: link removed, linking to competitors sites is not allowed Although, their bar graphs aren't that accurate.

That's why I don't think that website is an accurate representation of actual crime. There are plenty of census figures that show crimes in their actuality... which disputes the fact the Minneapolis is the in the same crime index as Detroit.. It's just a useless tool to get a "basic" understanding.. at least that is how I view it.

Yeah I've often wondered that about that as well. I've always heard so many great things about Minneapolis, but when you look their crime levels are really high.

You have to take most of this with a grain. If some of these stats dont sound right, theyre probably not.
For example, I hear you guys saying this and sites that say Minneapolis and Detroit have the same crime rate. I will never believe that for one minute. Thats one of the most ridiculous things I have ever heard. Detroit has 900k with 400 murders a year, Minneapolis has 350k with 50 murders a year. How does that equal the same? Even with the other crimes I dont believe it. I have personally been to both cities, Ive been to the Eastside of Detroit and North Minneapolis. I know that looks dont mean everything, but they do mean a lot. The average neighborhood in Detroit looks much worse than the worst area in Minneapolis. There is absolutely no comparison between those two cities. If your like me and youve been studying crime and urban areas for a while, you can easily point out the flaws in these things.

You're right, it is hard to believe. I don't know about the comparison site, but hamilton is pretty violent for a 60,000 city. people still fight and carry blades in hamilton, it's kinda crazy when you think about the modern crime environment, and a hamilton dude/girl will invite you to knuckles on your front porch. It's nothing compared to the urban jungles of the major cities you listed, but mainly because of the floating around of thousands and even millions of people that you see in those places. hamilton doesn't receive the covington/camden/esl effect of being immersed by the traffic patterns of the city, thus less homicides. i honestly don't know how long that will last, because so much has been closing up/for sale, and who's really going to invest in hamilton?

Sperling's Best Places, in my opinion is a shoddy site to use to compare crime rates. The reason I say that is because let's say a city's homicide rate is 30/100k, and another city's homicide rate is 50/100k, since they both fall into that 10-50/100k ... they'll get rated a 6, even though we all know 20/100k is an extremely large difference.
