Relocating to Coshocton area
Hi all
We are looking to move into the Coshocton area of Ohio. We will be looking for a small town in either Coshocton, Tuscarawas Guernsey or another county in that area. We currently live about an hour from Minneapolis and the 12 hour plus journey for me to watch my beloved Browns Indians and Cavs is just too much to do as often as I'd like.
Any advice on small towns in the area would be much appreciated as I've never lived in the area before. Especially interested in Elemenatry Schools as we have 2 young boys, the oldest will start Kindergarten in about a year. I have looked online for information about the area but I'd prefer to actually hear from people who live there as i believe they'd give a more accurate account.
Thanks for your help.

i am not from the area, but have been around parts for fun. my only thought is that unless you already have work figured out why not move further up northeast for the sake of the sports teams which provoked you to move?

Hey, thanks for the reply.
Work is not a problem as i work from home and can do it from any location.
We'd just rather live in a smaller town and like the look of the areas I mentioned. As long as it's within 2 hours of Cleveland that's fine for me.
Just can't decide at the moment, which town to go for.

If you tell us some very specific things you are looking for we might be able to help.

Hi CortlandGirl
I guess the schools would be the most important thing plus it would just be nice to hear what people actually think in general. I'd appreciate any opinion on the area on whatever subject anyone feels qualified. Living so far away and not being from the area all I can do is look online, but it would be great to hear locals opinions. I do realize that the locations i'm asking about are relatively lowly populated compared to other areas in Ohio so there just may not be that many people on these boards from the area.
I just fell in love with Cleveland many years ago and have always wanted to live close enough to be able to visit more often.

Well, i'm not sure that i can help you very much. I don't know much about the area you are referring to. I actually live in the Youngstown area, which is an hour from both Cleveland and Pittsburgh. I'm not sure we even have any regular posters on this board from the Coshocton area. Is there a reason you are looking there? Is it the scenery? Have you been there before? What do you like about it?? are you open to other areas?
If i were you i would try to relocate a little closer to Cleveland since that is one of the reasons you are moving here. There are plenty of towns, small cities, and villages w/in an hour of Cleveland. Also, if you don't mind me asking, where is it you are moving from???
Hopefully, if you are a little more specific we can better help you choose your next location.

Yes we are definitely open to other areas. We have looked at a few houses in Coshocton County and liked the area, but it was only a very short time we were there. It does have to be a small town / rural area and I guess we were looking a little further south so we could get slightly warmer winter temperatures and less lake effect snow. Living in a small town just over an hour from Minneapolis now means we get pretty cold temperatures. I know winters in Ohio are not going to be warm but it will be warmer than we're used to.
I'm definitely happy to read any ideas you may have about other areas. Thanks for trying to help.

Ok, i guess i understand what you area looking for now. I would recommend some small towns in maybe Geagua, Portage, Summit, or Stark Counties, but i believe Geagua is in the snow belt. If i were you i would look into the area around Akron/Canton. You can still find towns w/a small town or rural feel, but you would be much closer to the action. I think maybe CityGirl maybe able to help you in the Akron area.
I also would recommend Trumbull, Mahoning, or Columbiana counties, which are in the Youngstown metro, but i'm sure 000000 would advise against you moving to the Mahoning Valley. I only brought it up because you said you would be working from home and the jobs situation doesn't matter. There are a ton of great small towns/rural areas around here and the cost of housing is one of the lowest in the nation..........the reason for that is the lack of jobs. If i were to recommend towns in this area i would look into areas south of Youngstown like Salem or Columbiana. There are some great rural/small town areas around me, but we are in the secondary snow belt and average around 55 inches/year................last year Y-town had a record 90 inches!
You aren't really going to see much of a temperature difference between Cleveland itself and most areas south of Cleveland. There is only maybe a 5° difference at the most between Cleveland and Cincy. Currently (according to weather.com) the temp in Cleveland is 24° w/a 10° wind chill, Youngstown is 20 and feels like 6, Akron is 19 feels like 5, Coshocton is 23 flees like 11..............as for points south Columbus is 25 feels like 14 and Cincy is 28 feels like 19.

I don't know a lot about Coshocton. My aunt and uncle almost bought a house there once, and the only thing I remember from that visit is that it's very rural and isolated. If you're worried about snow, I would actually consider a place closer to Massillon, Canton, Wooster, or, as Cortlandgirl suggests, Youngstown. There are plenty of charming small towns and rural communities around the areas I suggest, and they aren't quite as isolated. (according to Google maps, it would take over an hour just to get to Canton, and over 2 hours to get to Cleveland from Coshocton)
If you really want that kind of isolation, then please ignore my suggestions.
