Niles, Ohio
Hey everyone!
I figured since the Youngstown area doesn't get much love i would share a couple of nice things Niles has going for it.
I lived in Niles for six years after i left Cortland and before i moved to Warren. Niles is sort of a blue collar/old industrial town (like many in this area). It has a good mix of housing, as well as a few nice parks and cheap utility rates (compared to the surrounding areas). It's also in a good geographical location south of Warren and north of Youngstown. Besides being home to the Eastwood Mall and many restaurants, Niles has access to some major roads in NE Ohio, like 422, I-80, and Rt. 11.
Anyway, the reason i started this thread was to share some information on the city's new wellness center, which looks very nice! Recently, my friend Courtney was lucky enough to tour the new facility. The center is named after Mayor Infante and is located in Waddell Park, next to the city pool. Here's a link to the City's home page that includes links to prices and rules for the facility: www.cityofniles.com
Here are some pictures he is letting me share w/all of you.

Here's a picture of the indoor soccer field:
According to my friend, "This place has like 15 t.v.'s. 50" to 65" inch flat screens everywhere. It has it's own mini Adidas Soccer Shop being that soccer is the main thing going for it. The field has a gorgeous anti-bacterial turf that those little rubber beads. Very comfortable and gorgeously lit as you can see with all upward shining lights."
Besides the indoor soccer field it sounds like this place has everything! "The rest of the facility includes a walking track around the whole soccer field, which I imagine to be a quarter mile. A dedicated indoor dodge ball court with it's own turf, a spinning room, a cafe with two restaurants catering food in (Alberini's and Vernon's Cafe supposedly), a nice waiting area (big) with furniture, a really nice large (but only one full length basketball court (with volleyball!) and drop down batting cages and drop down golf cages, nautilus room (I don't think it looks that large ) and locker rooms of course.
The pool next door will be enclosed (maybe spring) with a retractable roof and an indoor ice skating rink will be on the other side of that. And on the other side of that , there are plans for an outdoor driving range!! I have left out many details......"
This all makes me wonder if maybe my next move should be back to Niles.....hmmm........
Anyway, according to my friend, "there will be a grand-opening in three weeks on ground hog day. They are going to have a groundhog and all other sorts of things going on that day. I imagine it to be packed. Free give-away's too . Niles has spared no expense on the best equipment. The Food-Network will have an upcoming segment down there with local Firemen for a Chili cook off in the future with one their celebrity hosts present. He said the same company that installed the Basketball floors from Beijing is there now installing the basketball court....."
Courtney supposedly has more pictures and i will be sharing them with you guys as soon as he shares them with me.
KenD, maybe Niles would be a good location for you and your family since you are looking for affordable housing in the area.)
I was also told that the city is also in the process of finishing their Free WI-FI network for the whole entire city. One of the nodes was installed inside the building. I'm not sure if there will be any cost to this, but i will keep everyone up dated.

Thanks for the pics and info. I have my own Soccer coaching business so it may be wise to look for an area close to an indoor facility like this. I look forward to seeing more pictures when you have them.

CortlandGirl79,
Actually, Niles is high on our list, probably due to something you posted some time ago.
And thanks for the pictures, this is really quite helpful.

I agree on Niles, Cortlandgirl. Niles is a quiet town with nice, affordable homes for those who want to live with quiet dignity. Not pretentious or flashy as most of these homes are pretty old, but just decent homes in quiet neighborhoods.
As those of us who know the area have always known, most of the Mahoning Valley outside of Youngstown city is pretty much like Niles. Crime is very much concentrated in Youngstown, and in parts of Warren. I personally am rather wary of Warren, but feel safe anywhere outside of Youngstown and Warren cities. Most metro areas don't have places like Champion and Newton Falls.
