Question portsmouth, ohio

I see good and bad things posted about portsmouth, ohio. I'm thinking about moving there soon for a new job. For those who think i should not move to portsmouth which city would be the next choice and easy to commute back and forth to work?

I'll second that. I'd move to Ashland over Portsmouth any day. The commute is cake and there's more to do. Plus you have easier access to Huntington, W.V., which really isn't saying a whole lot but simply gives you more options.

I would also consider Wheelersburg, Ohio which is close to Portsmouth. Wheelersburg is a nice area, and your commute to work would be easy too. Wheelersburg is only about 7 to 8 miles east of Portsmouth, and only about a half hour drive or so from Ashland, KY.

Honestly, there are good and bad areas in portsmouth just like anywhere else, and you just have to know what to stay away from. Anywhere near historic district of 2nd and chillicothe streets is ok. There are some really nice areas around Grandview avenue and other streets around SOMC.

You want to stay away from Waller street, and the Scioto Trail area in terms of places to live......they are pretty shady.

That being said, I also need to point out that while Portsmouth is no boom town by any means, there is NOT more to do in Ashland.

I've lived in Portsmouth my entire life and moved to ashland last year to help take care of my mother. It's awful. It's not picturesque at all, the economy isn't any better, and the only thing they have that Portsmouth doesn't is a mall.

Portsmouth has more cultural activities and community festivals throughout the year. While they are small town in nature, they can be appreciated.

If you can't find a place to live near the downtown district, I would second Wheelersburg. But if you have children, don't send them to Wheelersburg Schools.....they're a snob mill.

I'd recommend Chillicothe Ohio. Nice, quiet little town. Only 45 mins to an hour away from Portsmouth and is only an hour south of Columbus. Hour away from everything, and Chilli is a pretty nice city itself.

I think Ashland KY would be a crazy move who wants to drive an hour to work if you are destined to work in Portsmouth and can afford it Wheelersburg is very nice Lucasville has very nice areas as does the city. Portsmouth has some areas with houses that are 250,000 plus homes with that being what the whole neighborhood is, how can that be a bad neighborhood full of doctors, lawyers, and rich elderly? The corrupt mayor lives in one of the worse parts of town right off the corner of Vinton and Young Streets I lived two blocks over for three years and never had any problems and it was just a block away from Wayne Hills on the corner of Mound and 17th Streets. But it was owned by PMHA the same people that run Wayne Hills, Farley Square, Lett Terrace, and Miller Manor so my rent was only 279 a month and that included water, trash, and sewage. It has its bad places and problems like anywhere else. The schools though like Wheelersburg, West, Valley, Minford, and even the city schools have some of the most spirit and pride of any schools I've seen throughout the state. Football is a big high school sport here and my hometown school West lead the way last year finishing 10 and 0 baby!! Wheelersburg was the game of the year it was nasty cold and rainy both teams were 9-0 what a memory my buddy Thomas Miller #62 got to play in that game he started his whole senior year and they played 2 post season games won the first and lost the second but that OK in I think 01 we were state runner-ups not bad for an unheard of school to them the announcers called them like 5 different names and they got trompled but it was great to see them on TV playing in the STATE CHAMPIONSHIP GAME can your highschool say they did that?

First of all, you're not very nice, in recommending Chillicothe, Ohio to anyone. It is not a nice, clean or quiet place in anyway. Chillicothe is no BOOM TOWN and the people are not so nice. The one's that are nice, have to much time on there hands and talk to much about you. There is no work and the work you can find, will not pay the bills. The City Towns people have no ideal what they are doing and have kept the town from growing. Chillicothe and Portsmouth would be a bad move for anyone. Don't do it.
