To all of you who ar wondering about the cancer here in clyde! My little girl has cancer and the state of ohio has sent us many papers on it, Yes there is a cancer cluster but not anymore then many other places. There words not mine.I did not go to any of the meetings for the fact that I did not want my child labled as a clyde cancer kid yet some how. People still found out. They have not gave us no reason and very little help. I think what they r trying to do is let things blow over. I got many papers telling us stuff but there was never a reason why. If I could aford to move I would but I can not and my kids go to school. If we say anything to any one all it does it start problems with my children in school and outside. If any new news I will let everyone know?

Clyde, Ohio is a small town, with easy access to Toledo, Cleveland and Columbus if one wishes to experience the excitement of the city for an evening or weekend. We have wonderful health care and access to a number of hospitals and doctors. We have a volunteer fire department that seems to be one of the best in the nation. Clyde has many opportunities for employment and a dependable and dedicated work force. The schools do a very good job of educating those who wish to be educated. The sports program is excellent. Crime is very low and Clyde is a remarkably safe place to live for children and adults. We have very beautiful and well maintained parks, many great sports programs for the children thru the parks system. A new swimming pool is to be built soon for use next year. The city street department does an excellent job of maintaining our streets. Our water, sewer and electrical rates are less than the surrounding area and well maintained. Our police department does a good job of keeping our streets safe. (30 years ago they did have a police auxiliary.) Those who represent us in government and in our schools are approachable and if given the chance will attempt to help you as much as they can. (I’m just an average person and I have never had a problem with either) There is a great concern about possible cancer cells; it does seem to be affecting many with wells who depend on ground water. It is being investigated and with underground streams feeding these wells the possible pollutant could be coming from miles away. Unfortunately it does take time to trace the source of the problem or what the source could really be. Those in health care and government are doing what they can and as quickly as they can. I have lived in Clyde and the surrounding area for almost 60 years. As I noted, I’m an average citizen, I have on many occasions questioned and approached city officials, school officials and county officials on issues for which I have had concerns even writing letters to locale newspapers, Never have I been black balled and ignore or had my child marked for retaliation. I always approach an issue with documented facts that can be backed by others, Therefore never a problem. This would be a much better world if it had many more places like Clyde. It is a town that believes in families! I have traveled thru most of the United States, overseas, spent some time in a number of cities, DC, Dallas, Houston, Miami, Atlanta, New Orleans and believe me Clyde is a wonderful family place. An average working class guy! Last edited by schedule160; 10-17-2007 at 12:29 PM. |

" I just wanted others to know a few things about this town if they had any thoughts of moving here."
Thanks. We are looking for a small town to move to and while we don't have kids/schools to worry about, we don't want to live near any environmental hazards so I appreciate the input. WedOnSamhain and wife! What other areas are you looking to move to? thanks. |

"some other type of plant in the area that is powered by burning tires and automobile fluff??" From the little sense that you are making I gather you are talking about the plant that would use garbage to create electricity with minimal emissions, thus saving the residents of Clyde money? Yeah, absolutely horrifying! ![]() The cops don't know how to file a proper police report? How would you know? Did you file a complaint because your neighbor's grass was 1/16 of an inch higher than it's supposed to be? But even if you were right, maybe they don't know how to file a proper police report because the crime rate in Clyde is so low. I'm also pretty sure Clyde doesn't have a tattoo parlor. Favoritism in the schools? Yeah, that's why all of Clyde's teams are so good, because they only let the rich kids play, and not because they select the best athletes to represent them, unless there is some sort of scandal going on in the tee-ball league, where everyone's not a winner! ![]() |

The cancer cluster in Clyde is not normal or acceptable, instead of looking to the air, we should look beneath our feet. Twenty cases of childhood cancer is astronomical in a small town.
I lived in Clyde for twenty one years, (I'm twenty two) and no, Clyde is not a joke, the people are friendly and I yearn to visit my friends and family and enjoy the scenery which is beautiful, (check out Blue Heron Reserve). However, I never plan on living there again. For one reason, Vickery Environmental, A deep well injection facility located on the corner of state route 510 and state route 412, about two miles north of Clyde. This facility should be no secret to the residents of Sandusky county, I urge you to look at government documents supplied by the EPA which show that millions of gallons of hazardous waste is legally being allowed to be deposited below the entire area. This site was fined over a million dollars in the eighties for illegally disposing PCB's, which are known cancer causing agents. While today they are presumably not illegally disposing chemicals. I find it curious that this cancer cluster is located on top of a hazardous waste dump, Vickery Environmental, please go to their website, they deposit known carcinogens into the Mt. Simon formation, which is a layer of porous sandstone located less than two thousand feet below Clyde, and the surrounding area, including Riley and Green creek townships and extending beneath the Sandusky Bay and Lake Erie. I now live in Kailua, Hawaii, and am quite content knowing there is not hazardous waste located 1,750 feet below me. The joke for me was attending the forum for the tire and fluff incinerator that is intended to be built in Clyde, it is yet to be constructed or operational. The joke,(not a very funny one) is that this plant is not primarily intended for electrical production, rather its primary function is the disposal of tires, the secondary purpose is electrical production. Facilities like the one proposed in Clyde are in fact proven to release dyoxin, (a known cancer causing agent). For me, a minimun emission of dyoxin is unacceptable. Now, why a community would attract, or permit another pollutor into an area that is suffering a cancer cluster is the joke. It seems my beloved hometown is suicidal and no one is willing to address the figurative elephant in the room. Recently, I got word that a friend and classmate of mine has recently lost her battle with cancer, and I know that excusing the culprits and glossing over the facts is not an acceptable reponse. The leaders of Clyde have ignored the fact that Sandusky County is the fifth most polluted county (out of 88) in Ohio. All of this information is available by the EPA. The fact that Clyde is suffering a cancer cluster and the fact that this town is located on top of a hazardous waste dump is in mind not a coincidence. As for the numerous reponses that this family should just move are unreasonable, Shouldn't an American citizen expect safety no matter where they live. Also, many families in this region are unable to just pick up and move, financial obligations can make a speedy move impossible. Not to mention all the families who have toddlers that already have cancer, moving is not going to cure their children's disease. Also, what about the numerous people who have been falsely reassured by State officials that this area is safe. My quarrel with Clyde has never been with the residents, or local police force, it has been directed however to the people that control Waste Management, the parent company of Vickery Environmental, who live no where near the hazardous waste dumps they operate, and who have never known the fear of losing their four or five year old son or daughter to cancer. |

Have lived in Clyde most of my life ~ boy, oh boy, ready to get out! Cancer is a real scare here, especially for the children! And no one knows why, nor seems to want to investigate it! I know of families buying water for their children to drink ~ just so they won't drink "our" water. And the town does seem very "clicky", if you aren't somehow involved in the school system and the sports ~ well, who are you exactly??? The town seems to be slowly dieing! Not much progress going on here, just the opposite! I do have to say, it is safe. You can go outside after dark and not fear for your life. But other than that . . . well, not much. Real estate prices are falling here, homes really aren't appreciating much. Yeah, I know, the whole nation is in that real estate "bubble". Do some investigating, other states are thriving! Ohio and Michigan is falling apart, because of being mostly manufacturing and jobs are closing left and right!
But you visit and then tell me what you think? :-) |

I agree with Ben Griffin, when he posted, "The cancer cluster in Clyde is not normal or acceptable, instead of looking to the air, we should look beneath our feet. Twenty cases of childhood cancer is astronomical in a small town."
Many schools and parks have been built on top of dumps (landfills) that contain carcinogenic chemicals. Did children diagnosed with cancer attend the same school? Janice R. England People Investigating Toxic Sites |

This sure has been an interesting thread for me to read over....
I currently live in Philadelphia, and will be moving back into Ohio, to the Cleveland area, this spring, for a job at my company's new office. But anyway, I was born and raised in Seneca County, Ohio (not very far away) and lived there for the first 24 years of my life. My parents both work at the Big Whirlpool Factory in Clyde (Dad has worked there almost 25 years) . I also have relatives who live in Clyde, including a cousin who just recently graduated from CHS. I've heard plenty of stories from my cuz and his friends about all the freaking drama there. It always sounded to me just like any other small town, with the angsty teenagers and their drama. But these posts in this thread about parents not wanting to rock the boat add nice perspective to the situation. Ive also heard before about supposed cancer problems there. With all the industry there anymore, is it really such a surprize that the air contains something contaminating. Also, this town, like many in Ohio, is lacking a decent supply of good quality jobs. To the parents of Clyde kids who posted in this thread, I wish you the best with your situations. Good luck getting out of there (if that is what you've decided). I'm sure you wont miss much. |

Hello,
Your situation sounds very much like ours here in Trenton, OH. We went through all the proper channels (Health Dept, EPA, etc.) and got absolutely nowhere! The "officials" bounced us back and forth from the State to the local level and no one will take any action and do testing. We have a thyroid cancer cluster here and we have taken it upon ourselves to get some answers. Best wishes to you all. I hope you get the answers you need. Last edited by Yac; 01-21-2008 at 02:37 AM.
