Anyone know any born'n'bred Ohioans with a very strong Southern accent?
Saw this documentary about the election set in the Ohio River valley of SE Ohio and they had extremely strong Appalachian accents; surprised me, actually. Do any of y'all know folk like that?

We are in S.E. Ohio due to family obligations and I can't say I've heard that. However, those closer to the border by Cinn. sure do. My mother was from Wheeling, West Va., but I noted they seem to have more of a Pittsburgh type accent.

If anything the folks I've met from Cincy didn't seem to sound that much different than people in Cleveland. I do agree that I've definitely noticed the Pittsburgh-type accent a lot in SE Ohioans. I notice in it some people around here as well. But I think when you get down towards Marietta and into South Central Ohio you hear more of a "y'all" type of accent. Strangely, I've met a few folks from the Canton and Mansfield area who almost have a y'all type accent as well.

I've been asked numerous times where I come from with my southern accent by people right here in my home town of Chillicothe. I usually reply "born and raised here but I have West Virginia blood roots" and the usual response is "Ah that must be it."

My sister in law has a distinct twang, yet she was born and bred in Dayton. Don't know where she got it!

I was raised in Carlisle and Franklin, and people have always said that I have a southern accent. Maybe because my Mother's people were from Kentucky.

I've lived in SW Ohio, Kentucky, South and North Carolina and they all sound pretty much the same to me.

Folks from extreme southern Ohio can be a confused lot. Some speak with a typical Midwestern accent, others sound like they're from Kentucy or West Virginia.

Interesting...in this documentary, I think it was a bit slanted...they were portraying these people are rednecks with a racial prejudice against black people. A lot of them said they wouldn't vote for him for no other reason than he was black, even if he was probably the better bet to improve their ailing town. I forgot the name of the town, but it was very small and very rundown, almost on the Kentucky border.

I'm not going to say that element doesn't exist, it's just that it seems as if the media at times went out of its way to find the redneckiest people in the hopes of finding a good sound bite. You may have noticed that Ohio's electoral votes went to Obama, so don't hold it against the entire state.
