Question about Moving Towards Youngstown
Hi, I was looking for a little bit of advice.
My company is going to be sending me out to work in Sharon, PA but as a young guy in my twenties I'm not sure that living in the Sharon/Hermitage area would be very interesting. I'd like to stay within 30 to 45 minutes of the area but I could be convinced otherwise.
I'm looking for the names or websites of any apartment areas around Youngstown, I'm pretty flexible on the cost and I've got a roommate coming with me also.
Things I'm interested in (if it might affect the areas/properties suggested).
I work out 5 days a week (so a fitness center or gym nearby would be helpful).
I love disc/frisbee golf if there are any courses around the area.
I'm also a fan of clubs/dancing/karaoke and other interesting drinking activities, bowling, camping etc.
Movies, museums, parks, art are all interests for me.
So far the hardest thing for me in trying to make this move is actually finding websites and names for apartment complexes in the area.
So far from looking around this website it seems that Boardman might be a good area but I don't know what else.
Can anyone give me any suggestions?

Living in Boardman and commuting up to the Sharon area could be a bit of a pain, as really all the apartments here aren't very close to the freeways and you'll have to fight traffic on 224 to get to them.
Before I inherited my house here, I lived in Austintown for a while. I lived in a complex called Westchester Square. It was close to Route 11, which made it a hop, skip and a jump from almost anywhere. Austintown has most things you'll need and what isn't there is close by in either Boardman or Niles. I lived by myself there, but there are 2-bedroom apts there and the rent is cheap and when I was there, all utilities were included.
Apartment-wise in Boardman, I have a friend who lives in the Mill Creek Apartments off of Lockwood. Those seem like decent apartments, its probably the one place in Boardman I can think of thats relatively close to the freeway, but if you want to do any shopping you still have to mess around on 224.
As for gyms, I'm a lazy fat ass, so I can't really tell you, but I believe there is one in Austintown somewhere. I do know there's one in Boardman near 224 and Tippecanoe called Creekside Fitness or something like that.
As for bars and clubs, I don't really go to them that much, but theres plenty in the area. The hipper, trendier ones tend to be in Boardman. I like neighborhood and/or dive bars, so really I don't go to any Boardman bars. In Austintown, Bill's Place or O'Donold's might come close to what you're looking for.
As for outdoor stuff, you've got Mill Creek Park, which is huge and is a great place to go running, walking, biking or hiking. I like to snowboard there during the winter.
Museum-wise. We've got the Butler Art Gallery and the Museum of Industry and Labor, haven't been to either.
Hope this helps!

I know of a guy from this site that works in Sharon and moved to Boardman to live. He is in his mid-20s. He just told me he thinks, "Boardman is nice. Millcreek Village is great." I believe Millcreek Village is an apt. complex, but i think it may be expensive.
As a 30 year old female living in the Youngstown area i can tell you that you'll probably have the best chance of meeting people your age if you live in the Boardman area. I'm not that big a fan of Boardman (too much congestion for me), but it might be a good place to rent until you can figure out what area best suits your needs. Niles might be another good option.
I'm looking for the names or websites of any apartment areas around Youngstown, I'm pretty flexible on the cost and I've got a roommate coming with me also.
Simco_Home has apartments and townhomes all over the valley..........i live in one of their properties and have been happy w/it so far. You might also want to check out TribToday.com - News, Sports, Jobs, Community Information - Tribune Chronicle - Warren, OH or Vindy.com Local News Youngstown, Warren, Columbiana Ohio - news, sports and information and look for rentals that way. You can rent a house for fairly cheap in most areas. Eastwood Arms on St. Rt. 46 (niles-cortland rd.)is also popular with new residents
Things I'm interested in (if it might affect the areas/properties suggested).
I work out 5 days a week (so a fitness center or gym nearby would be helpful).
I'm not as familiar with gyms or fitness centers in the Boardman area. Up here in Trumbull County we have 3 or 4 very active gyms in addition to the downtown Warren YMCA.
Fizek brand new and located at the Eastwood Mall in Niles
GLOBAL HEALTH & FITNESS is also new and located on Elm Rd. in Warren
There is also Quantum Fitness & Health Inc. in Howland on E. Market St. and various small gyms and fitness centers all over the area. All three of the gyms i listed above are within 5-10 minutes of Simco's Northbury property in Warren. They also are not far from apartment living in Niles.
I love disc/frisbee golf if there are any courses around the area.
The only frisbee golf that i know of is located near and on Kent State's Trumbull campus in Champion Township, right next to Warren and with easy access to the Rt. 5/82 bypass. Disc Golf at Kent State University Trumbull Campus
I'm also a fan of clubs/dancing/karaoke and other interesting drinking activities, bowling, camping etc.
You won't find many dance clubs in the Y-town area like you would in bigger cities like Pittsburgh or Cleveland, but there area few places. There are some nice bars in downtown Youngstown, not sure about the dance clubs because that's not my thing. I know there used to be some in the Austintown/Y-town area.
I'll comment on Warren/Niles. If you are looking for karaoke i know ..:: Cleats - Home of the World's Best Wings ::.. on Elm Rd. in Warren has it once a week as well as many other bars.
If you you're looking to dance and meet people your age you could probably hit up Up a Creek Tavern - Home Page in Warren on E. Market near the Howland border and the Rt. 5/82 bypass. There is also a ton of establishments all over the valley.
I'm past the loud crazy party stage, so if i go out you'll most likely find me at Cleats or one of these places: HorseShoe, Welcome to The Lake Tavern Website ~ 330-637-1971 ~ 6071 St Rt 46 Mecca Ohio 44410, http://buenavistacafe.biz/, Buffalo Wild Wings in Niles or some other random, more adult places. You will rarely find me at Up-A-Creek because i can't stand being around all those young 20s somethings grinding on each other, although it is a nice place to go in the summer because they have a great patio as does teh Horseshoe.
Bowling shouldn't be a problem because there are plenty of alleys all over. You might also want to check out Funny Farm Comedy Club | AJ's Nightclub & Restaurant - (330) 652-HAHA (4242) or Elm Road Drive-In Theatre: Welcome for entertainment.
If you are looking to camp i know there are campgrounds all around, but i know a lot of people that camp at Mosquito Lake: Ohio State Parks - Mosquito Lake State Park
Movies, museums, parks, art are all interests for me.
I would definitely check out Home | Mill Creek MetroParks if you are into parks. Many cities and towns around here have nice parks. YOu might also want to check out Welcome to the Web Home of Buhl Farm Park or Welcome to Boardman Park. They are some of the bigger nicer parks int he area, but even small little towns have nice parks.
If you are looking into museums and art i would definitely check out the Welcome - The Arms Family Museum of Local History and The Butler Institute of American Art which is totally free and located next door. You might also want to check out the Museum of Labor and Industry OHS Places/Youngstown Historical Center of Industry & Labor.
So far the hardest thing for me in trying to make this move is actually finding websites and names for apartment complexes in the area.
So far from looking around this website it seems that Boardman might be a good area but I don't know what else.

Like i said before, if you decide Boardman is not your thing you might want to check out Niles, which has a decent amount of apartment living. It's close to the mall, minor league baseball Mahoning Valley Scrappers: Home, restaurants, bars, etc. and is located between both Warren and Youngstown. It's also about 10 minutes or so closer to Sharon/Hermitage than Boardman.
If you have more questions feel free to ask and welcome to the Valley.
If you don't mind me asking, where are you moving from?

Can't go wrong with Camelot Lanes in Boardman. If you like Bocce, check out the Royal Gardens in Girard.

Wow thanks you guys have been supremely helpful, especially Cortlandgirl79!
I'm going to be moving from Cincinnati, Ohio.
One of the things I'm debating is whether or not its better to live close to work and drive a half hour for recreation stuff or drive a half hour to work and live close to recreation stuff.
Here in Cincinnati I live in a suburb that's about 5 minutes from work, but I only have to drive 15 to 20 minutes to get to just about anything.
Expensive isn't a problem the ideal apartment would be a 2 bedroom 2 bath with a nice amount of space.
One thing I've never had much experience with was finding a house to rent. I guess I just don't really have any clue how to go about doing that.
I'll check out the suggested apartments and that rental site you mentioned. I looked over Craigslist sort of vaguely but was concerned because I had no real idea what the neighborhoods listed really ment.
I also found a really good looking house (at least externally) that was in Boardman but the cost seemed so cheap it made me wonder, though that might be because I'm used to things being more expensive here in Cincinnati. I mean a 4 bedroom house for under 700 in Cincinnati would be sort of a pipe dream, or a ghetto palace.
This is the 4 bedroom I was talking about : http://www.thatrentalsite.com/For-Re...855-43002.html

Actually, after looking that house up, thats only about 1/2 mile from where I live! I live on the other side of Market St. from there.
That neighborhood over there is known as Forest Glen and its a very nice neighborhood full of beautiful old places like that. And if it is as nice on the inside, that rent seems about right. Rent here in the area is cheap. You can get a 1-bedroom for about $400/mo. or so.
Living on this end of Boardman isn't so bad as you can get on 680 at Midlothian so you don't have to fight the traffic on 224, (except when you have to shop)

One of the things I'm debating is whether or not its better to live close to work and drive a half hour for recreation stuff or drive a half hour to work and live close to recreation stuff.
Driving from Warren it takes me about 20 minutes to get to Sharon and it's all highway. I think no matter where you are driving from on the Ohio side it will take anywhere from 20 to 35/40 minutes. Anything south of Youngstown (Boardman/Austintown/Canfield/Poland) is going to take at least 10 minutes longer than the commute from north of Youngstown.
I think Boardman would be good, but Niles would be a close, convenient second in my mind. I guess i'm kind of partial to Niles since i lived there for six years and i'm from Trumbull Co. If you do live in Niles everything will be about 5 minutes away. Downtown Youngstown will also be about 10-15 minutes away depending where you live. It takes me 15 to get there from NE Warren. There are a lot of good rental houses in Niles for pretty cheap. When i lived there the house next to me (4br, 1full bath, 2700 sq/ft) rented out for $650/month plus utilities..........just remember the gas bills on an old house like that will be out of this world! I'm thinking probably at least $300/month in the winter.......most likely double that. Here's a link to the rentals in the Warren Tribune: http://www.hot-ads.com/newspaper/ind...sification=703 If you have questions on certain addresses i'm sure "the muck" and i could help out, maybe even some of the other posters. You might also find something nice in Cortland, Howland or NE Warren. Just be sure to ask me if the neighborhood is ok.

Thanks it will take me awhile to get through all the suggestions and links you guys have thrown up here, although the first thing that I've noticed is that finding a two bedroom two bathroom apartment seems impossible haha. Even the two and three bedroom townhomes I've seen so far only have 1.5 bathrooms. This is one of my main concerns only because I know how long it takes both my roommate and myself to get ready in the morning (we're like zombie people) so two bathrooms is nearly a requirement.

These are pretty expensive, but they are in a good location, close to everything and you can have 2BR and 2Baths. http://www.pmdbuilders.com/index.cfm...ityDetail&ID=8
