Gosh, I am so sorry you had a bad experience there. I'm glad you were able to move when you did. I hope you are happy now.

Just an update... The City of Steubenville is installing Cameras in the high crime areas of the City. That being in the Pleasant Heights and Belleview Area. This way, if anything happens, they can watch what goes on and catch the criminals in the act..(which they have done a few times already now!).
Whethere this deters anyone, or not, its the Citizens that need to be vigilatant in any City, and call in tips for the Police so they can have help in catching all those who perpetrate crimes against our Citizens! If you know something and dont report it, then your just as guilty as the one who commits the crime! So, dont expect the Police to be able to cover something when you know who did it, and are afraid to turn over your neighbor because he may threaten you...He cant do much in jail to you and the more we get those criminals off the street, the less crime there will be!
It amazes me that people will sit and lay blame to this and that, yet do absolutely nothing to stop or hinder any criminal activity. It baffles me to no end.
May the LORD Bless each of you.
I wish you well...
Jesse

Thats great news, wwm! Thanks for posting that. I know a lot goes on at nite when most people are inside and don't know it is going on. The cameras will help that a lot!

that is great news..I like the idea of having camera for surveliance on the high crime areas. And to be perfectly honest. I know Steub has some crime activity, but it's all in where you go in steub. There are some area's that are really safe and there are some that are really bad. Usually downtown is pretty bad and up thru university blvd. PVC, PH and Bellview..that is nothing new...it's was bad 20yrs ago and it's still bad today. Y'all think it's worse now, but I doubt it. I used to play pool at Nancy's elbow Inn on 4th st. People got stabbed there, hookers (no i was not one), pimps and drug dealers frequented that bar. And some of them i knew and some of them I knew to stay away from.
but like i said that was yrs ago. i doubt it's gotten any better, but I really doubt it's gotten any worse than it was then. Probably just more prevelent now. Things are getting reported more frequently and bad news is always good news for the media !!

That is true, you'll hear the bad won't you. The bad always spreads the fasted. It is good news though that the police are on top of it and doing something about it. That is always hopeful.

Good point wwm. It does seem that crimes are way under reported in this area. Fear I believe does play some role in this, however it is not a very good excuse, and probably not the main reason. I don't understand how anyone could witness a serious crime and not report it. They might as well be driving the getaway car. It is my personal opinion that a lot of people do not report crimes because they are not personally affected or do not want to be bothered. It seems like everyday people do not have each other's backs like they used to. Except the criminals. People need to take responsibility and stand up for themselves and others. It is rather disheartening to think that some people can be so selfish. Not much is going to change until people start to realize this.

Ok, I cant see how Steubenville is taking such a beating around here! Every town has its problems, be it unemployment, crime or everything else under the Sun.
Lets start with some of the positive on Stuebenville now... 4th Street from the High School to the end, (by the Castle looking house) has brand new lighting! Go there at night and it looks like a runway for some airline! LOL! Big old fashion lights sit atop poles and it really lights up the place.
Steubenville High School (Big Red to those in the 'know'), has a new pool and gymnasium built maybe 12 years ago, and the School Board has bought property on Commercial Alley (behind the Salvation Army), to build a new 7th & 8th grade! The building should begine in a year or two.
They have been tearing down houses in blighted neighborhoods, and revamping others so that the town is looking pretty good now. South end, (past the city limits) still looks in bad shape, but, its not part of the City!
The University is a going thing for Students far and near, and is recognised across the World! (I have seen lisence plates from all over the United States there and have talked to Students from other Countries. The Metropolitan Housing Project, (located next to Fransiscan University), has been taken over by the University and they recently bought Beleview park Golf Course to do what they want with it.
Jefferson Community College, (formerly known as Jeff Tech, but has upgraded to a College now), has bought the Electric complex on the other side of St. Johns Highway and has turned it into classes. They are constantly updating thier computer labs and adding onto the College!
We have new Schools, Harding, (they tore down the old harding and made it a parking lot), and on the John Scott Interchange. Grant School is gone, (demolished). And Garfield is completely remodeled into a new school.
We have new businesses from the new Post Office (next to the Old Fort Steuben, that was built about 15 or so years ago, and the post office followed in a year or two after that), and buisnesses from State Route 7 clear to the West End!
They are redoing the roads to the Mall, widening Lovers Lane to accomodate traffic.
The only negative thing is, that the Steel mills havent been doing well... Weirton Steel is down to about 600 or so people and the tin mill is the only thing running right now, (but thats in Weirton W.VA), and Wheeling Pittsburgh Steel, (they have been sold to Severstal), has idled both plants, North in Steubenville and South in Mingo for right now, (the economy).
The Industrial Park (located on St Route 43 was taken over by Steubenville, (annexed), so we have businesses in there, and they seem to be thriving, and even adding on!
Steubenville is getting to be an older population now. We have a lot of retirees, (including me!), that have chose to stay here, because we love the City.
Drugs and crime will come and go, just like in any other City. The less people want drugs, the less the drug dealers will come around. Our Police force is doing a good job at getting to the drug dealers and running them out of town, or putting them in jail.
I hope that others will someday come back to Steubenville, and make this a thriving Community as it used to be in its 'heyday'...But, with little prospect of jobs, its up to those who can start a business to want to come and start up here, as we still have a great workforce that is willing and wanting to work!
Oh, yea, one more thing...Trinity West has just been desgnated by Boston Scientific (manufactorer of placemakers, like I have in my chest), that Steubenville is only one of 5 sites that they are recognising for the implant of thier devices! So, that puts Steubenville on the map in the Medical Field, as the Doctor who performs these are conducting classes on pacemaker implants at least 4 times a year! (Also, he is the same Doctor who implanted this pacemaker into my chest, and he is some sort of medical professional who can map the electrical impulses in the heart, and they have a shortage of these types of Doctors, and we are lucky to have this one!-->he is the only one from Cleveland to Charleston West Virginia!). So, another Plus for Steubenville!
May the LORD Bless each of you.
I wish you well...
Jesse

response to the stubenville q.
ok, i dont think there are too many people who can say they know that area better than the higgs family. i, myself, am a higgs.
i grew up in dillonvale and hung out around stubie and other places. i will say this much.. if you are a person with a lot of self respect you would not move back to stubenville once you have left. you could probably officiate the entire city as "the slums" now. i moved away yrs ago and i can say this much... since i have been gone, it has not changed nor do i miss it.
