Youngstown-Crandall Park Area
I came across a couple of homes in the Crandall Park area of Youngstown and am tempted to take a look at them. I almost fell out of my chair when I saw the low home prices. I know the crime rate is high in Youngstown, but being from NY, I know a couple of blocks can make a big difference sometimes. Tell me what I need to hear.

I had never heard of Crandall Park, so I did a Google search and found a few interesting things. It's on the North side and is near Gypsy lane which is by North Side hospital. I really don't know how bad the area is anymore. If it's cheap, and inside city limits, there must be a reason. My brother is a builing inspector for the city of Youngstown. I'll ask him what he knows about it this weekend. Here's one article I found in my Google search. http://youngstownpride.blogspot.com/...-district.html

Thanks South Range. I understand Crandall Park was developed in the 20's + 30's as an upscale neighborhood on 1200 acres for steel magnates, lawyers, doctors and other well-heeled residents of Youngstown. A satellite map of the area shows many fine, large homes in a well thought out development. There are two houses that I am interested in: one is on Gypsy Lane across from the golf course, and the other is on Redondo Rd across from Crandall Park near 5th ave.
I look forward to your brother's opinion of the area.

re:crandall pack
whataplace, I live about 25 minutes north of youngstown, but used to drive past both of those places on my way to school at youngstown state a few years ago. I'm also a very big fan of the cool old houses in that area. I know that a lot of houses on 5th are still selling for $150k or more, which is still considered a pretty nice 1500 to 2000 sq/ft house in the mahoning valley. The only advice i can offer is that the Northside is still a pretty nice part of town. The house on Gypsy is in a halfway decent area and i'm sure has a great view of the golf course. This area is also very, very close to the y-town suburb of Liberty Twp. which is also nice and has many affluent residents. Lots of shopping and restaurants within 5 minutes(well, a lot of shopping for around here). I believe Redondo close to 5th is ok, but probably not so good w/in a block or two. Redondo is further into y-town and probably about halfway between Liberty Twp. and downtown. I think someone like southrange's brother would have a better opinion than me, but i would think the gypsy house is in a better area. Although, i must warn you that some roads running parrallel to 5th can be a little "ghetto", just my opinion. Also, if you like the old house in youngstown you might like some of the neat old houses on the east and northsides of Warren, about 20 minutes from y-town. Eastside is definitely the nicest part of town near the trumbull county country club. Hope my reply helped a little. Good luck!

Thanks for the input CortlandGirl. I'll keep an eye out for houses in Warren and near Trumble CC.
I also found a nice house in the south-southwest section of Youngstown. Says Mill Creek Park is in the backyard. Anyone familiar with this area?

My brother says that the North Side is the ideal spot to live in Youngstown.
He wouldn't hesitate for a minute to move there. Gypsy Lane and 5th Avenue are the nicest of the area. Some houses over 200k. Some in the low 100's.
Former Mayor Pat Ungaro lived there before he had to move to neighboring Liberty. He took a job in Liberty and had to move there. Many of the Youngstown big bosses still live near Crandall Park.
We would have to know the name of a street on the South Side. If it's by Lanterman's Mill it's a really nice area. Around the corner near Glenwood Avenue, could be some of the most dangerous areas of Y-town.
I have said this before. I would not live anywhere within Youngstown City limits. That's my personal preference. I like open spaces, and own lots of land. My brother has to live in the city for his job. He also likes being within walking distance of the bars.

He also said Redondo from Belmont to 5th Ave is very nice. Cross over 5th and the houses start getting run down. Not dangerous like the South Side, but in serious need of repair.

Thanks South Range, I appreciate the information. The other house I'm interested in is on Cascade Drive, just south of Canfield Rd where it crosses Mill Creek. Mill Creek Park is behind the house.
I'll bookmark the website for the tax assessor's office. I like to use Zillow.com for gathering information on a particular address. Very handy site. They have the best satellite photo service by providing N-S-E and W views.
Thanks again.

You managed to pick another upscale and safe area. The houses aren't as big as they are on the North side, but really nice. We have a family friend that lives on Glenmere. It intersects with Cascade. This is also close to Boardman. If you were to cross the lake from Cascade heading due East, you would end up in a dangerous place.
