I just didn't think it was a fair characterization of the state. Parts of Ohio are certainly "nasty," but there are some real beautiful parts, too.
By the way, when someone quotes another person, just click on the little blue box with the white arrow next to their name and it will take you right to the thread from where their post came.

Nasty was meant as hot. I rank the Hocking Hills region as one of the prettiest places I have ever seen. We have some land there close to Vinton county...nature at it's best! The people too!!!

Oh, sheesh, sorry about that, I guess I'm just too sensitive since it seems that Ohio is being attacked left and right on here. That said, I think different parts of the state have legitimately different climates. The average day in Cincinnati in the summer seems a lot hotter and muggier than an average summer day in Cleveland.

I don't currently live in Ohio, but the housing prices make it very attractive. Also, the fact that you get to vote for tax increases. Amazing! Most states/cities don't give you that option. They will either tie everything in one big bond issue or raise the taxes without voter input.

I'm new to Ohio (a year now), so I'll give you an unbiased review. I'm not 100% sold on Ohio myself, nor am I against it. I'm just in the middle.
-Ohio is massively divided. Rural/urban, south/north, rich/poor, black/white, super-religious/non-religious, etc. It's really evident everywhere here. Ohio has some of the worst inner-cities in the country and some of the highest crime rates, yet has beautiful, peaceful and rich suburbs. It has cool liberal/progressive neighbourhoods, yet OSU has religious freaks screaming in the Oval every single day about "salvation." And I literally mean screaming as people walk by, horrified. I've never seen anything quite like it.
-There are some parts of the Ohio economy that are doing well, but many parts that are absolutely not. Ohio's population is in decline and, after Michigan, it's had one of the most consistently under performing economies in the country this decade. They don't call it the "rust belt" for nothing. And you can truly feel that in everyone of the cities, even in Columbus proper, which is doing much better than Cincinnati or Cleveland. Also to note - almost every single one of Ohio's major cities has been in population/economic decline for the past 30 to 40 years, with the exception of Columbus.
-Weather is not horrible. Last winter, there was a stretch of about two unbearable weeks in Columbus, but for the rest of the winter, the temperature was between 20 and 35 F. But the weather varies GREATLY in the state. The north is very snowy and cold in the winter, while the south is milder.
-There are lots of professional sports teams here, but the Ohio State Buckeyes rule above everything else.
-Cost of living is very, very favorable. Groceries are expensive, though.
-The people are warm and friendly (for the most part).
-But they are generally small-minded. Even a good portion of the educated, more worldly people think that there is no place better than Ohio on the face of the earth and boost Ohio continuously, which becomes nauseating after a while. I teach at OSU and am sometimes shocked at the small mindedness not only of my collegues, but of my younger students.
Above all, be very careful about getting advice on this forum (especially the Ohio section) because it's full of Ohio boosters. And while there's nothing wrong with that, it's a bit misleading to talk up Youngstown and Dayton (which many do) when it has among the highest murder rates in the country and has been in severe economic decline for decades. Take a look at the charts on profile side of the site - they tell a fairly consistent, reliable story.

The part about groceries are expensive, though. Have you tried FL, CA, MA lately. In OH we get strawberries cheaper than in FL, where they were grown. Everything is relative. Food in Ohio is cheap on balance. Pick about any big city in the USA and you get the typical drugs, street crime and dismal situations. I was in San Francisco last fall, talk about the charm definitely being gone.
There are many sections or regions of Ohio I would never live in. Will not attempt any of its bigger cities. It sure is not all pretty or progressive, you do have to pick your spots carefully. But I temper that with where else am I going to go? The sad part is a lot of the USA is a rotting hole.
Like have you tried Boston lately. Tell me about drugs, crime, horrible urban environments, been there done that. You will not get anybody in the MA forums to tell you the truth about that mess, same goes for most of New England.
I am still looking for the perfect place where Paradise is cheap, easy and nobody else has found it yet. And there ain't some nitwit with a gun or knife around every corner. Certain parts of Ohio you actually can go out without being surrounded by illegals enough to feel you are in some foreign country. They will even speak English if poked enough or drunk enough.
Ohio does not have any claim on small minds. When was the last time you were in New England, no shortages up that way. Not only wee minds, but they are convinced in their own deluded manner. All what floats the boat. Lots of areas are going into the crapper, Ohio is not alone. Sometimes you are picking the best of bad choices. The good olde dazes are gone for so much of the USA, maybe even the World.

I currently live in Las Vegas, NV and I am currently looking to move to Ohio. The weather being one of the main reasons. Family in the Akron area being another big one. I've lived in Las Vegas for about 23 years now and I am really getting sick of the temperature being over 100F every day from mid-May through the end of August and Super low humidity (less than 20% most of the time) I've been to Ohio many times in every season, only northeastern Ohio though. I find the weather in Ohio to be, in every way, better than where I currently live.

Great ending to your post, Cosmic. If only everyone else on these boards realized that no place is perfect, and every single place out there has its problems.
