Default Sales Tax

What items in general are covered under the sales tax?

For instance, here in TN, EVERYTHING is taxed (as high as 9.75%) but I know in some states clothing and shoes under $50 is exempt, as well as "necessities" such as food.

What about in Ohio?

Food isn't taxed in ohio, but alcohol, cigarettes, and pop/soda are. I believe sales tax is determined by county.........for example, in my county, Trumbull, the sales tax is 6.5%. If you eat in at a fast food place it's taxed, but if you order it to go it's not. I live pretty close to the PA border and in PA they don't tax clothes, so many of us travel to Pennsyltucky for clothes. hehe!

Cort's right, every county sets its own sales tax. The base state sales tax is 5.5 percent, but the counties can tack on additional taxes if they're voter-approved.

Here's a map of the tax rates:

I'm kinda shocked at how high some counties' sales taxes are ... I probably shouldn't be, eh?

When I have the occasion to be at the Millcreek Mall in Erie, I'm amused to note the proportion of out-of-state license plates to Pa. license plates.

Not that I didn't do the same thing when I lived in Ohio ...
