Ohio relocation , need real info on cities not just crime rates
My parents moved to ohio where my dad is from because he had to relocate in order to keep a job with the company he has worked for for nearly 20 years. The places they are looking for a home in are towards toledo but def not in toledo.
All of my dads family is up there and obviously my mom . I have no family here where we currently live in Warrenville, SC except for my husbands family and of course my husband.
My husband is planning to go to school to become a nurse and our original plan was for him to go to school down here and then for us to move up to Ohio after he graduated. We planeed to move to the general area of my parents and to also start a family and then for myself to be a stay at home mom for a while and for me to go back to school.
Our problems are that we are afraid that he won't be able to find a nursing job that easily when we finally get to move up there with him being a newly licensed nurse . So then we thought maybe it would be better for us to just go ahead and move.
My husbands grandmother owns a home that she doesnt live in that is near a lake and towards the youngstown area but not in youngstown. ( I am not sure of the exact city) She said we could stay there is we needed to . We have five pets and finding a home to rent near my parents would be next to impossible . We are not currently in the position to buy a home.
Are there any decent colleges in these areas? Do you think in a couple of years crime rates may improve.
Are there any jobs to be found in either of these areas? My background is only in banking/money handling. My husband has bounced from one type of industrial/ manufacturing type job to another. So , I know it would not be as easy from him to find a job of that type in the youngstown general area.
For the cities I have looked at I have really liked Mccomb, maumee, and walbridge.
So help me decide whether to stay in good old South Carlina til my hubby graduates school or for us to take a big leap to be with my family in ohio.
vmoon2008,I can't give you much advice on Toledo. I myself live in Columbus, Ohio. I will say we have shortage of nurses just like everywhere else. I would suggest looking up local hospitals in Toledo or the city/area you want to live and see how many nurse jobs are open. We definetly need more male nurses and I think they may even get paid more.

I think you might be confusing Ohio geography a bit. Youngstown and Toledo are at least 3 hours apart. Probably closer to 4. And you have to go through Cleveland suburbs.
I don't know a thing about Youngstown.
Toledo has Medical College of Ohio that you may want to check out. Maumee is right next door to Toledo. And is a very nice town. It may be too 'citified' if you have 5 pets. Walbridge is a little more out but an easy commute into Toledo. McComb is probably about an hour drive to Toeldo.
Having all those animals may make it difficult to rent. If you end up near Toledo you may want to check out renting a place off of 25 or 75 between Toeldo and Bowling Green. Lots of farms and houses with large yards. I couldn't tell you how many would be for rent though.
I work in manufacturing. There are approximatley 800 plants in Youngstown-Warren area. About a 1000 in Toledo/Wood County. If he is looking for an entry-level line job while in school he may just want to go to a temp agency. They could probably have him a job in a day or two.
I would definatley find out what the name of the town with the lake is and how close it is to Youngstown. And please realize Youngstown and Toledo are nowhere near each other.

Reason: spelling
Youngstown is about 3 hrs from Toledo. I live 15 minutes north of the city in Warren and it takes me around 2.5 hrs to get to Perrysburg. I can get on I-80 about 15 minutes from home and take it all the way. I've also taken 422 to 480 to 80, takes about the same amount of time.
Is your hubby looking at 2 or 4 year nursing programs. While I am not a nurse, I worked in health care for years and nurses are very defensive about which is better-- and it is always what they have. If he is looking for a 2 year program, which is completely sufficeint for hospital or private practice work, there are a lot of community colleges with nursing programs. How about Owens? I know their is a Findlay campus, but I think that it has multiple campuses. If he wants to do more than floor nursing, he should look into a BSN, as many of the higher level nursing positions require a bachelor degree.
McComb isn't near Toledo at all. Walbridge is fine and so is Maumee. Perrysburg, Sylvania, and Ottawa Hills are fine too.
The University of Toledo and the Medical University of Ohio are the biggest game in town. Owens Community College has nursing too, I believe.
I wouldn't worry too much about the crime rate in Toledo. Stay out of the central city. I used to work there and never had a problem, but it didn't look very good.
There is a section in the Sunday Blade that is devoted to health care. I know several nurses and they have changed jobs without issue. Toledo and the area have a number of hospitals.
Oh, I def know that there is three to four hours between toledo and youngstown but it is still better than the 14-16 hours between SC and ohio.
I think my hubby is planning on two year college and then getting more accredidation after getting a better job.
My husband has been working as a temp for the last 3 years and I must say it is a real drag. There is finally some positive things going on with employment here. I think it started in our community with the lay off two or three years before this recession really hit hard.
Thank you all for your advice.
