Default Athens today vs. 30 years ago...

Both Ohio University and the own itself. You hear more about street-fest/riots today than in the past. It used to be the big Halloween block party and the one "Spring riot" every year. Now there seems to be talk of multiple events turning into problems on a regular basis.

Anybody want to compare the "back in the day" Athens with the current Athens???

I've heard the riots are blown out of proportion. Students I know also told me that there are far too many people visiting ALL year, which adds a lot more people to the streets, parties, and bars on the weekends, which can get tiresome.

I don't really think it's anything to be concerned about, there are "riots" at colleges all around Ohio. I know Kent State has had it's fair share of problem, and I always hear about couches being burned at Ohio State.

The school and student body itself aren't problems. The city of Athens, very poor already -- is struggling with the recession and drug use has skyrocketed with the locals.

The commenters who blamed kids from other schools or out-of-towners are exactly right. I go to Akron, and every time there's a big party around campus, kids from other universities with nothing to do will come to party. Those same kids are the ones who try and start crap with everyone.

I'm not trying to say that OU students are innocent, but I can attest to their claims that out of town kids are the real issue.
