Default any info/opinions on Huron, Ohio greatly appreciated

My family and I are considering a move to Ohio. When I was little, I spent 5 years in Huron. I loved it. I was only 11 when we moved. The memories I have are great but vague. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. I have 4 children, so schools, crime, and friendly people are at the top of my list to consider. My home now is in Florida, I just want to make sure I'm making the right decision. Please help. Thanks.

Jaime, i think you will really like Huron. Huron, Ohio has to be one of my favorite smaller towns in the country. It has been growing but a at a small pace. It is right on Lake Erie and is very popular with tourists. The beaches there are some of my favorite in the Great Lakes. Its not far from Cedar Point. And is about 1 hour from Cleveland. Overall i could go on and on about Huron. Huron really is a great city and i think you will like it.

Thank you so much for the advice. From what I can remember, I pretty much feel the same about Huron. It's just so hard to do much research from here in Florida, so I greatly appreciate your incite. My kids are worried about friends/fitting in. Are the people pretty friendly? Down to Earth?

I think you will love living in Ohio. I dont think your kids will have a problem making new friends. Huron is a nice friendly place. The school system is great also. That is a website about Huron, just copy and paste it to read and get some information about it. If you ever get interested in checking out other places in Ohio just go to the Ohio State Directories at the top and click on a town that you might be interested in.

Ohio offers the change of seasons which i know alot of people in Florida dont like the snow but, our winters are not oppresive and blistering cold like northern Cananda and Siberia. Sometimes when we get heavier snow falls and the snow will sometimes sit on the tree branches, it is very beautiful to wake up to in the morning. Of course you kids might be happy when they get a snow day. In Ohio they do get the roads cleared off quickly though for when you need to head off to work. And at night when the snow fall comes in it gets very quiet and it is very peaceful. Then we have fall where the trees turn Red, Orange and Yellow. Then Spring when everything is in bloom and summer. Sometimes Ohio can get hotter than Florida. Huron is right on Lake Erie and you have some really nice beaches but, if you have a pool thats nice too.

My wife is originally from West Palm Beach, Florida. We just were recently down there. I was amazed by the amount of hurricane damage. I know alot of Floridians are getting out as quickly as they can. Its getting too crowded and too expensive. And i couldnt leave my house and head north if a hurricane is coming and then wondering if i will have a house to come home to. Thats why we love Ohio. Its safe and we get the heavy thunderstorms at times but nothing to the extent of hurricanes.

If you are looking for things to do Cedar Point is not far away. http://www.cedarpoint.com/ Thats Cedar Point's website. Check it out if you want to head there. I know they have some nice hotels on the Lake. Then Cleveland is not too far away. If you want to go to pro sports games you have the Indians, the Browns and the Cavaliers. Even though we live in the suburbs of Cleveland and we have alot of entertainment out here there is alot of entertainment in the city as well. There is a place in downtown Cleveland called Tower City. It is a tall office building but at the first four floors is a mall with restaurants. And then on Cleveland's lakefront we have the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame and the Great Lakes Science Center. Then not too far on the other side of Cleveland in the suburb of Aurora, Ohio there is Geauga Lake. Another really nice amuesment park. Just giving you ideas here.

Ohio is a great place to live and raise a family in my opinion. I have alot of new neighbors in my development from out of state. About 50% of them are out of staters and my neighbors from Michigan love it here. And im sure you will too. Ohio may not offer what Florida can but, Florida also cant offer what Ohio can. If you have any more questions please feel free to ask.

Thanks again Paintballer. You have been so helpful. You've just about got me sold! Honestly, I'm ready for the move. You're right, it is very nerve racking every hurricane season, wondering, "O.k., is this it? Is this the hurricane that makes the decision for us?" My husband on the other hand, is a little hesitant. He was born and raised here. Has never been farther North than North Carolina. He's also worried about finding a good job. He's a carpenter. Do you have any idea how the construction business is doing around Huron? Are they building alot of new houses? I'm a nurse, and from what I understand, nursing jobs are pretty good up there. Is that right?

Well your right that the nursing jobs are doing very well up here. My wife is an RN and she works for the Heart Center of NE Ohio. She use to have to travel to the suburb of North Olmsted but they built a new office right here in Westlake so that tells you they are getting bigger and need more offices. Now as far a construction goes im an Urban Planner and i just rencently was talking to another guy on here who was looking to move to Ohio also from Florida. The construction business is booming around Cleveland and its suburbs. I was reading up on Huron to get more information for you and i saw this aerial view of the town and they had this highlighted area that was going to be new homes and businesses. So by the looks of things construction looked to be on the move. Also remember Huron has a growing population so that means there probaly is alot of development. I know here in Westlake my development is going through its third stage. Its not even at its final stage yet. Anyway if you have anymore questions i will try and get them answered.

Thanks for all your help. The information you've given me has been invaluable. It's so nice to know you have friends a thousand miles away that can help you with such an important decision. Please let me know if you find anymore info that I can use, or that might help persuade my husband even more. I can't wait for him to read what all you have written about Huron. If there is ever anything you need info or help with regarding Florida, please let me know.

I did check out the Cedar Point website. How Awesome! As my kids said, "That's as cool as Disney World!" I can only imagine how much we'd have to do up there. I bet the places to take the kids are endless. I let my husband read what all you wrote about Huron. He definately wants to check it out. I have the feeling Ohio is just the next hurricane away. He's getting pretty fed up with everything there is to fight in Florida too. Please let me know about the websites you had in mind. Thanks.

Well glad you liked the websites and hopefully your husband will like what he finds and sees in Ohio and what it has to offer. I will work on some websites for you so you can get a better idea of what Huron is all about.
