Living Around Youngstown
I am looking to attend YSU for graduate school.
I was just wondering where you would advice living? I would prefer to live outside of Youngstown in one the nearby towns. Just wondering where you think is best, I read Poland, Canfield, and boardman are nice? I also have a small daughter who will be starting kindergarden soon so area schools are important.
Thank you.

I decided to do a little Google searching to see where these apartments are.
The four seasons apartments are on New Rd. in the Wedgewood part of Austintown. They are between Raccoon, and Meridian Roads. I always heard that area was going ghetto, but couldn't verify it myself. I don't have any reason to go there.
Jamestown Village is on the North side by Tod Avenue. 3100 Valley Dale Dr NW
Warren, OH 44485-1582
(330) 898-3035
I have no idea what that area is like.
Google puts Kerrybrook apartments right in the Wedgewood plaza on Raccoon Rd. I believe they are actually a little bit South of the plaza. I may have met the owners of those buildings at one of our school functions. We live in the same district.
Google puts Carnegie Arms on Youll St. in Niles. It looks to be 2 streets North of Robbins Avenue. Somebody else will have to give details on that area.
Ok, I did the leg work on the locations. Somebody that knows about these apartments will have to give details. You might want to try Carriage Hill apartments in Canfield. 386 Fairground Blvd # 104
Canfield, OH 44406-1515
(330) 533-5454
That's the only school district with apartments that I would recommend

You don't want to live in Jamestown Village. If you're looking to move out towards Warren i would look into Northbury Colony, it's in the city of Warren, but Howland Schools which are excellent, Carnegie Arms isn't bad, i would also look into Eastwood Arms in Niles. Good luck!

I live in Howland, which is a GREAT area. Incredibly clean, nice, low crime rates, amazing schools. It's a very liberal suburban "soccer mom" type of place.

Thank you for the input and help. I am having trouble finding anything in Howland.
I have an updated list of places I am looking into, feel free to give any feedback if you know the areas or school district they fall in.
1) Cambridge Square Apartments - on market st in Boardman, I visited the apartments they looked nice, Stadium Drive school (kindergarten)
2) Carnegie Arms- In niles
3) Ashberry Village- in Niles, I visited these and they were also nice, Not sure on what school district.
4)Northbury Colony - warren - someone was nice enough to recommend theses to me and they seem nice.
5)Jamestown Village - I have heard bad things about it so this is probably a no, its in warren.
6) Millcreek Village - Boardman, have not had the oppertunity to look at these yet, these are on the west side of Millcreek
7) Peppertree Apartments, or Greenbriar, still awaiting more info on these.
Once again thank you for all the help. Especially those of you that have messaged me with advice.

I looked up Ashberry in Niles, not sure i like that location, there are a lot of drugs and crime on that side of town, i'm guessing it's Niles schools though. Northbury is in Warren, but is Howland Schools. These condo rentals are in Howland, but they are kind of expensive PMD Builders - PMD Builders - Offering homes on choice lots in several Northeast Ohio communities.. You might also want to look into Cortland Courts apartments in Cortland. Did you check out the rentals on www.tribtoday.com???

^You might be able to get a better deal off of a private landlord. Currently i rent a 2 BR 1 Bath apt that's app. 1000 sq/ft. I'm located in a nice neighborhood in the downtown area, great schools (Lakeview), and w/in walking distance to most businesses and Mosquito Lake. I pay $350/month, plus gas and electric. My landlord pays my garbage, water and sewer.

That area itself isn't bad, but there are better apartments than those. Those apartments always looked like they saw better days, I think they're might be some Section 8 in there, but don't quote me on that.
Although some people on this site don't like them, (I'm guess I'm just not as picky or paranoid as some), I lived not far from there in the Westchester Square Apartments and I liked my apartment there. The rent was reasonable and I felt safe there. I lived in a studio, but they did have some larger apartments there, although I never saw any of them. I couldn't tell you about Austintown schools, but at least living there, you could walk your kids to school, if you wanted.

I have a friend who lives there and it seems like a decent place. It kind of reminds me of my place at Westchester, reasonable and nothing fancy, but a decent place to live.
I find apartment pretty much anywhere in the suburbs to be all kind of similar, so you really can't go wrong with any of them.
I also agree with what Cortlandgirl said, drive around, as sometimes some small buildings or houses might be available to rent and aren't listed in the paper or online. Sometimes you can find some good bargains this way.
Heck, if you plan to stay in the area, you can probably find yourself decent house for about $70K or so.

jak3811, there is no reason to stay in area after you get your graduate degree. there are not even jobs for people with undergrad degrees in the area. i do not know what your plans are, but i am sure that if you come for a larger city than youngstown that after a few months you will want to leave as soon as you can.
