Cheapiest way to move across the US
My husband and I are moving in a month and are looking for the cheapiest way to move. We currently live in Peebles, Ohio and are moving to Oakley, Kansas. It is approximently 1100 miles and it can take up to 20 hours.... We are moving everything with us including furniture, refridgerator, washer/dryer, two beds, ect. I am not having the best of luck finding a reasonable way out there. Does anyone have any suggestons?

been there. done that. looking back........I'd dump, sell, give away anything that couldn't be replaced by good used items at the new location. Why move a fridge if you can buy a good used one for $100 or so? Same with washer/drier. I've bought used appliances for decades, only had 1 washing machine break and I fixed that for $40 and 3 hours of my time. Always sold my sets for about what I paid for them too.
Reducing the "stuff" you take may allow you to use a smaller truck, perhaps pull a trailer if you've got a vehicle good enough to do it.

Have moved to 14 different cities all across the country in the past few years. Rule 1 - if you absolutely aren't going to use it - get rid of it!
Have a huge yard sale, sell off the appliances and ALL the junk you "might" need. Take that cash and buy replacements when you relocate. Same goes for furniture that you don't have any big attachment to. Shopping for replacements in your new area is a great way to find your way around and meet people. Sell off everything you can because the less you move, the smaller the truck you need and the cheaper it gets.....but it's NEVER cheap at the best of times.

Getting a U-Haul and packing & unpacking yourself helps save money but remember you have to pay for the gasoline - and return the U-Haul with a full tank. The heavier the load, the less miles per gallon and filling the tank is at least $100. Figure 12 miles per gallon at highway speeds and you will see how it all adds up. So, the less you move, the cheaper it is. Get a U-Haul with a power lift gate, rent their moving blankets and rent a 2-wheeler to move the heavy stuff.

If you are really intent on moving all of your furniture there are also "pods" and "crates." A friend of ours who was living up here in Alaska moved ALL of his stuff and I mean all of his stuff, lol, including heavy gun cases. He had them drop off a crate, he filled it up, called them and they came and picked it up and transported it to Minnesota for him. I know it was much cheaper then having a moving company do it for him. If I can reach him, and if you are interested let me know, I'll try to find out what he paid. He did this last year around August.
The only problem with selling stuff is you basically give it away since people don't want to pay much with used furniture (I know, it happened to us once). I only hope if we move again I'll be able to have my stuff shipped but then all will depend on our budget and the good ole economy.

This is a good way to go for that trip EB. Some folks even drive u-hauls up here to AK and out when leaving. Heck of a trip depending on where you are coming from or going...for us, it would have been 4,000 some miles.

I agree with your plan also. Problem is I am one of those who gets attachments to their stuff lol...it drives my husband crazy. I did have to do that though last year when we went down to Ohio for family obligations.

Moving companies are not cheap and some of those are crooked, double check bbb.
Check out www.pods.com, they drop plastic containers at your place, you fill it up, they deliver it. ABF freight systems also has u-pack moving option (they would drop a pup trailer in your driveway). A rule of thumb to estimate whether you are being ripped off or not is $2/mile, it's going rate 95% of trucking companies would haul for these days.
