are there HORSE people near boardman/columbiana?
This is our first post. We are 'thinking" about moving to the boardman/new middletown/salem/columbiana area. On our one and only trip to the area, we didn't notice a strong horse presence...but what do we know, we are from Arizona, and don't know Bo Diddily about NE Ohio.
We live in the east valley of Phoenix (apache junction), where horses out-number humans...so we've never had to "look" for horse facilities.
If someone has links/connections to the horse community, any information will be greatly appreciated; stables, people that are just into general horse riding. ( we do not show or breed horses)....
we have an older, rescued race horse, and we are looking for an affordable
stable that is well-equipped for winter conditions.
Any general information on the area will also be greatly appreciated.

Yes, there are horse people all around here. Just about every kid in the 4H has a horse at the Canfield Fair every year. The fairgrounds boards race horses year round. There are a few stables and riding arenas very close to me. I'm within a few miles of the fairgrounds. Beaver Creek State Park has several miles of horse trails, plus a horse camp ground. Just West of Canfield on route 224, there is another Millcreek Park horse riding area in Ellsworth Twp.
I would skip Boardman and go to Springfield local, or South Range local school districts in Mahoning County. The second choice would be Columbiana local, or Crestview local school districts in Columbiana County. These are rural farm districts with excellent reputations. Most people around here have their horses on their own land. Bare land goes between 5 and 10 thousand an acre. You can get some really nice places with land, barns, pastures, and ponds for $150k-$300k depending on which school district you are in.
This is the link to the Canfield fairgrounds. I'll try to find some local stable links when I have more time. The Canfield Fair

Thank You
Thank You So Much For Your Quick Reply. I Have Read A Lot Of Your Posts And You Seem Very Familiar With The Area. We May Want To Rent First Before We Buy, Just To See What Area We Like The Best. We Do Want To Find Something Eventually Where We Can Have Horses At Home, but For Now May Need To Board For A While. Thanks Again For Your Help!

As southrange said, there are plenty of horse people around. My friends parents board their horses in a neighboring town and there are plenty of people that keep them on their own land. I know of a number of these properties for sale in my area. Although, i'm located in Trumbull Co. which can be 20 to 45 minutes north of the boardman/columbiana area. If you have any interest in moving north of youngstown instead of south i can be helpful in that area. I think SouthRange knows a lot more about Columbiana Co. and the Boardman/Canfield area than i do. What else would you like to know about NE Ohio??? What kind of work are you looking for? Hopefully you have something lined up if you are considering the move.

Here are a couple from our local phone book.
Buckeye Horse Park 9260 W Akron Canfield Rd. 330-533-0362 ( I believe this is the one I mentioned on 224 earlier.)
Diamond Bar-K Ranch 10912 Echo Dell Rd. 330-227-9043 (I believe this Rd. is down by Beaver Creek State Park)
Ken Dirienzo Leffingwell Rd. Berlin Center 330-547-9220 (Just West of Canfield, Berlin Center and Ellsworth share the Western Reserve local school district. That's another excellent school with plenty of land in the area. It's also where I was educated.)
C&T Stables Gromley Rd. Salem index.htm (Salem is on the Mahoning/Columbiana border.)
Make a copy of this post before the mods delete it for advertising.
As mentioned above. I always like to know where you will be working, so I can recommend the best place to live. Most times it makes a big difference in mileage.
At the Canfield Fair web page, click on related events and links. There are horse clubs there.

Az2Ohguy's wife
I sent you an E-mail with more information. I would just like to say to anyone else interested in the area. Searching by school district is the easiest way to go. Most of the towns around here share addresses with a neighboring town.
Here is an example. If you live in Ellsworth Township, you can have a Canfield, North Jackson, Berlin Center, or Ellsworth address. You will most likely be in the Western Reserve school district, but it turns out that there is a small sliver of the township that goes to Canfield and Jackson-Milton schools. It also makes a difference on which school levies you will be voting on. Some schools beg for money every election. Some only ask on very rare ocassions. It will be easier on your real estate agent if you are familiar with the school districts.
