I have to kind of disagree with you Flinty. In the May 3 tornado many of the people were traveling who were killed, but I didn't hear of any killed while traveling to a shelter. Most of those killed on the highway were just not paying attention or seeking shelter under overpasses (very bad idea). For a small tornado it is better to stay put and seek shelter in your home, but for a monster like May 3, Gary said you would have to be underground to survive and he was right.

In my small town at the time, we had two public shelters open and they were packed shoulder to shoulder.

My advice is to know your shelter options and listen to Gary England. Be aware of the weather conditions in your area every day. You don't have to live in fear, just be educated about the weather. Plus, in rainy weather, if you see water running across the road, turn around, don't drown. More people in this state drown in floods than are killed by tornadoes.

Mustang does have sirens and public shelters. The shelters are normally the schools. My family typically goes to the Lakehoma Elementary school on Cemetery Road nice street name for a shelter location) they have have 15 + class rooms underground with tv's so u can watch the weather.

Thanks everyone Sorry if I ask too much. I'm paranoid as heck most of the time, and since I like to steal my baby nephew and cousin, I want to be sure I can get them to a shelter if it happens when I have them.

My brother said the bite is a mosquito bite. We had tons of those in Nevada and they never bit me. Darn things. I thought those bites were only itchy, but it was sore too. (Must be Oklahoma's way of weeding out the weak newcomers lol.)

And thanks for the tornado tips. My dad says since they are calling for thunderstorms next week I should be on the lookout for them. But as I don't have a car, if I'm home alone and one hits I guess I will hide in the closet. (Knowing me though, the sirens will go off and I'll run to one of my neighbors and cry that I don't know what to do. I haven't met them but this place has such nice people I'm sure I won't be turned away to face a tornado on my own.)

Merryfim, I think I go to Lakehoma Elementary too. I think I'm right off Mustang Road... (near Walmart and Arbys and Charlie Bean.)

Okay enough rambling! Sorry, my mom just went back to Nevada this morning, she had come here to visit my bro and nephew and help me get settled thinking it would be easier. I think it was harder lol, I feel so completely all alone. (Wow. My whole sounding older than I am has evaporated now that I'm without my mommy and daddy...)

Welcome to Oklahoma Clover. It doesn't sound like a mosquito bite, but if it is a brown recluse it will turn black. If it still bothers you in any other ways go to a doctor. Mosquito bites are only itchy. I found if you put nail polish on them the itch goes away. If you put it on chigger bites it does nothing. Only benadryl and cortizone.10 works for me.

I have lived here a year and I don't know what to do in a tornado. I can't think of any place to hide.

Be careful going out in the garden due to chiggers. Those things are really bad. I learned the hard way. Spray your clothing if you do have to be out in the tall weeds or plants. If you don't have a back yard then you just have to be careful when you go in the country. Tick bites are something else, and I had Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever this year. So you need to be aware of these things and learn about them on the internet.

It is hard when you first start out and don't have your parents. But we are all here like Peggy said.

I asked my nephews mom "Where do you go if the tornado sirens go off?" and her reply was "Outside to watch it."

So I'm calmed down. Nobody who has been here for long seems worried about them =). Thanks everyone for calming me down lol.

I gotta say I love it here more than I did when I was on vacation. Course I bumped into some teenagers at Walmart that I never want to see again (very rude comments) but I never have liked teenagers. Too immature for my liking. Course I have such insecurity issues they may not have been talking about ME. **shrug** that's an issue of my own that won't change no matter where I live. I dunno how to shake THAT off.

But anyways, it's wonderful. My cousin (white) and her hubby (black) get NO looks or comments here. And it shocks me every time they go out without threats or comments or I see people of different races together. I really never thought I'd find a place like this. I love to see people not hating each other over stupid things that I consider to be non-issues. +^_^+

Now I just need a car... and a job.

Glad to hear how you are doing Clover. I think I am too old to be your mom, so I guess I feel like I could be your grandma.

It's hard to get around with no car. Do any buses run out your way?

Nope, don't think so. I haven't seen any buses.

Hopefully I'll have one soon.

I hope your brother or cousins will help you find a good car. I have bought some cars that were real losers.

You make a good point with the drowning peggy. I dont know how it got lost on the forum. But Kingfisher had....what like 4-8 deaths because of drowning. I was surprized no one ever posted any response to that...It was a tropical rainstorm and was considered phenom of a storm...I just doesnt happen in mid america!
