I just recently took a job offer in Durant, Ok. We have 4 children and have one with a rare sydrome CFC. I'm desperately seeking the communities input on the special needs programs and schools for Durant (Bryan County) area. Also, we only have a very short time to locate a home. Any advice about the area housing and the best place for a family to locate would be so welcomed. I see there is alot of small communities around Durant as well. I can't seem to find much information about the special needs programs at the schools. Any recommendations or information would be so appreciated. Thanks for your help, |

Maybe this will help. I copied this from the school's website. The area code to call is 405.
Seeking special needs students The Durant School District requests help in locating and identifying children with disabilities from ages birth to 21 who may be in need of special services. A phone call to Duane Merideth, assistant superintendent, or Dale Welsh, special education director, at 924-1276 will receive immediate response in providing appropriate education services, free of charge, for qualifying students with disabilities who live in the Durant School District. Here is a link for Durant Schools: Durant Independent School District |

First, welcome to Oklahoma! We are origionally from Ohio and have been living in Cinici for the past two years. We are moving to Ada (about an hour north of Durant) in about a week.
Durant is a great area and you shouldn't have too much of a problem finding a great home at an affordable price. You will also find things like property tax and such are much lower than many places in Ohio. I do not know a whole lot about special needs edcuation students in Durant. However, keep in mind that if you don't find what you're looking for in Durant, you can also live on the Texas side of the line (Sherman/Denison Area). Texas schools could possibly be a good fit as well for you. Good luck! |

Durant ISD is aggressively soliciting special needs kids. Contact Durant ISD directly. The best places in Durant to live: Silo area, North of Main St and West of First Ave. The surrounding communities have their charm, with rural atmosphere. There is a home for sale on Rodeo Rd, which is South of Durant, but not into Calera. It's a good looking brick home three bedroom and under $100K, if I remember correctly. Moderator Cut

If you accepted a job in Durant, I would suggest you guys live in OK...rather than the Sherman/Denison areas of Texas. Durant is one of the fastest growing cities in Oklahoma. It is also home to Southeastern Oklahoma State University. There are tons of new home construction in the area too.
I suppose if you are wanting more of a country and conservative feel than you may look at the small towns like Calera, Silo, etc. If you want to stay in a more liberal (as liberal as it can get in that part of the state) area...I would stay in Durant. The University offers many different programs that offer diversity. Durant is small enough that if you were able to come for a day you could easily cover "potential" homes or at least finalize the area of Durant you would like to live in. |

I would of suggested living in Sherman over Durant. Schools are good in Durant area, but rental homes is HORRIBLE! I would call it every slumlords dream. If buying a home then I would say wise decission as homes are cheaper & taxes are lower....maybe why streets & roads have huge pot holes tho.
