Such a classic that has unfortunatley given OKC the dustbowl persona....Fortunately it happened a billion years ago and OKC is nothing like what the grapes depict. Food for thought for those moving to OKC....Which of course was the original thread.....The book should probably be discussed in the book forum part of city data. At least it should be discussed in a thread entitled Grapes of Wrath in the State forum.

You are right Happytown, but I will just say one thing and that Steinbeck made quite a few errors in his book when describing Oklahoma. He was really more familiar with CA.

Ya...
Gives reason to why it is so controversial. But it makes for a great study in the classroom.

For anyone interesting in reading about the Dust Bowl, The Grapes of Wrath subject has been started under the general section of Oklahoma. And the Food for Thought about OKC is that we will never have another Dust Bowl, hopefully.
To get back on track, which is my fault we got off it, lol, those are great photos of Oklahoma City. Maybe someday I will get back there.

If you are interested in the area, you should read the newspaper to find out what crimes are reported. I don't think there are any small towns where you would be afraid to go out at night.

Stilwell, Oklahoma (OK) Detailed Profile - relocation, real estate, travel, jobs, hospitals, schools, crime, news, sex offenders
The above link will show you the crime stats for Stilwell. It appears it used to have a bit of a problem, but is now well below the national average. From that site you can check out the crime rate and stats in the other towns you were curious about.

who needs dallas when you have okla city!
Most of the people we know who moved to Okla from the Dallas metro said they wanted big city amenities with a small town feel. I think that sums up okc pretty well. Aside from visiting friends, there was never any reason for us to drive south to Dallas. And with all the great things happening downtown, there will be less and less reasons as time passes. I just hope all the misconceptions about Okla continue, because it's helped insulate okc from many of the problems big cities are facing around the U.S. I'm not so concerned about the city's image, as I am about maintaining the great quality of life that it offers.

Cosmopolitan...schomosmopolitan.
I agree with the above poster. I enjoy this city just as it is. Let the world live with their misconceptions and we can continue to enjoy the city that is ours.
