Which OKC TV Channel Do You Get Your Local News From?
Okay, all you fans of Oklahoma City television. It's time once again to gather around your friendly neighborhood computer campfire because I'd like to hear from you. Which TV channel in the Oklahoma City metro do you get your local news and weather from? Maybe you have one favorite or several. Maybe there is a personality that you like that may be a reason for you to tune in. Perhaps you have a favorite go-to station for severe weather coverage, since that is big stuff in Oklahoma during the spring and summer months.
So now, let's hear from the people who make it all possible: you. What's your favorite local OKC station for news and weather? (Hang in there, Tulsa, I'll cover you all later, so no cheating). I'll also include a poll for you to participate in, as well. Without further adieu, let 'er rip!
Also, guys, I know that there are areas well outside of the metro that pick up OKC channels, places like Enid, Weatherford, Chickasha, Stillwater, Ada, Ardmore, and McAlester. You folks in those places can chime in, too.
My favorite in OKC is Channel 9. They've got a long-standing tradition of excellence, plus lots of viewer loyalty. But I peek at all the others, too, whenever I'm in the metro for a visit. There really isn't a bad station in town, and all are quite impressive.
My goodness, Channel 9 has a dominating early lead in the polls. Yikes!
As for Channel 9, my grandfather, who lived in Muskogee, was a huge fan of Gary England back when England got his start in the 70's at KWTV. On other occasions, we ended up watching Channel 4 on the weekends. Still remember Jim Williams with weather and Robbie Robertson on sports. Their news set back in the mid-70's was an absolute trip.
KSPI-52 has a fairly decent newscast on at 5:30PM daily.
What makes the station fall off the "radar screen" if you will, is the fact that the TV stations programing is one of the all time biggest jokes I have ever seen.
They have been showing the same old worn out "classics" over and over for what seems like three years now...
Gary England rules! He is funneee. His okie accent is great.
Last year when the tornado hit their CH 9 studios, all you heard was Gary's feet running and the camera kept rolling with no one there! It was funnier than heck. Gary finally came back. Apparently a tornado rolled right over the studiios.
He ran this pic of our "baby" last Holloween on his "HOT SHOTS" at the end of his weather spiel. Our dogs love him too. Except the pic we sent in said, "To Gary England. Happy Holloween."
Obviously, since I live in Texas, I can't comment on today, but when I lived in Oklahoma I always watched 4 and 5 more than channel nine. But, that was probably because channel 9 wasn't clear in our area we didn't have cable tv back then. I do like Gary England for weather though; he's the King of weathermen. So, I had to vote for channel 4 since that's what I watched growing up. We received the following channels when I was growing up:
Out of those four, only channel 10 and channel 4 were halfway clear. If you stood with your mouth open and arms in the air, along with some tin foil on the rabbit ears, you could get channel 9 for a good 15 minutes..

Want to hear something funny? In Muskogee in the 1970's, the TV arrangement I saw on my grandparents' old TV set was just VHF, with all 3 Tulsa big network stations, 4 and 9 from OKCity, Channel 5 from Fort Smith (KOCO was blocked out), KTEN, and Channel 11 in Tulsa. I think 3 and 12 were snow, and 13 was weather dials (LOL!!!). Now, today is much different with the cable choices and all the extra local stuff, as it's pretty much in the Tulsa market.
