Hello all. I plan on working at the VA Medical center in OKC within the next month. Is there a good area to live around this facility? Not worried about schools-no children. Thanks for any input.

I don't know what your price range is, but for apartments the Deep Deuce and The Classen would be convenient to the Med Center and are supposed to be nice. Both are in interesting areas, Deep Deuce is near downtown and Bricktown. The Classen is in Little Saigon neighborhood. Maybe someone else knows apartments in OKC?

I forgot that the VA Med Center is part of OHSC/research park near downtown, bricktown and the Capitol complex. Here is a link to some of the apartments and info

Hello happytown and peggydavis: I appreciate your information. Do you know offhand if duplexes are common or rare in that area? Thank you.

That is an older part of town and the only duplexes I can remember would be smaller and suffering from neglect from years of renters. There used to be some great places to rent on Robinson between 23rd and 36th, before they widened the Broadway extension. There are some nice houses in the area but you need something in one month so that would be out. The Garage Loft Apartments look great from the outside and are about 1 mile from the Medical Center.

If your going to move into that part of OKC I suggest you get your concealed weapons permit and something like a Glock 9mm semi auto pistol. Try to get on day shift, after the sun goes down it's not a safe place to be. City officials try to hype the place but they still have big gang problems in that area. Just go talk to the nurses that work the ER over at University Hospital across the street.....

Any office park/campus the massive size of ouhsc is dangerous at night. The crime element is n/east of the area. I wouldnt live directly east of the med center either. Lincoln terrace that is near the capitol building/Govenors mansion/harn homestead/ok history center has become a real estate hotbed and is north of the med center. My aunt lives there and has had no problems. Lincoln Blvd was a prostitute strip for a long time. They have destroyed all the motels and nasty buildings north of the capitol complex to create parks and a safer area. Police officers even live in some of the houses in that area showing off their PO cars parked in their driveways. I applaud the city officials that have done an enormous job in turning the area around. You should warn all the professionals that live in the condos and apartments in Deep Duece and downtown/midtown/uptown that I listed. You still are living in the stereotype of the 80s. A Glock is one bad boy gun though!

There are plenty of reasonably safe areas that are not more than 5-10 minutes driving time, even under the worst possible traffic conditions, from the OUHSC campus.
I'm not sure about rents, but The Classen is a nice-looking converted high rise office building. Deep Duece is quite new and very convenient not only to campus but to the Bricktown entertainment district as well. OUHSC has its own police. If you were to work a shift other than days, you can always call the Campus Police who will send an officer to personally escort you to your car. |
