I would love to move my family to the Oklahoma city area and I know nothing about Oklahoma. However I have seen some things on the internet. Currently I live in Louisville Kentucky and my husband and I would love to take our family elsewhere. Also are the jobs good there because my husband is a truck driver and I would like to know if trucking business is booming .

Hi Ursela...Welcome to the forum. OKC is diverse and has a lot to offer. Crime in OKC is somewhat low compared to many cities of the same size(look at crime index on city data). The city is large in sq. miles...So there are many areas you would be delighted with and others that you would want to stay away from. Most people feel that the area north and nw of D-town is the safest area in the city. This area is widely considered the most urban part of the city. OKC is going thru a major renaissance so you will find a lot of construction and development all around you. Many parts/neighborhoods that once had crime are rebounding and becoming safe. Great real estate investments can be made in these areas of town. The State of Oklahoma is becoming a great place to invest for many people in a number of ways. Your husband that is a truck driver would surely have a job considering all the interstates that connect around the city. OKC was considered a truck stop for many years but has become more of a small entertainment destination for the past decade. Hosting the Big 12 championships in a regular rotation with large cities like Dallas and Kansas City/Hosting the NBA with the Hornets and is coming close to getting its own NBA team/Development of Bricktown and surrounding eccentric districts/Its a city that easily passes taxes for a higher quality of life/Wonderful historic neighborhoods/Good new museums/Close in proximity to The University of Oklahoma which draws many young professionals to the area. A rich history of hospitality and great people. I could come up with vast amount of other great things that make up the personality of OKC. All cities have their negatives and OKC certainly has its own but I think you will find it an exciting place to live that is very progressive!
Here are a few links to help you get acqainted with OKC. Im sure many will help give their 2 cents. Oklahoma City, Oklahoma (OK) Detailed Profile - relocation, real estate, travel, jobs, hospitals, schools, crime, news, sex offenders
Louisville, Kentucky (KY) Detailed Profile - relocation, real estate, travel, jobs, hospitals, schools, crime, news, sex offenders Hi Ursela, these two links will let you compare the cities. The one for OKC is what Happy was referring to. As far as employment, there appear to be many jobs in OK. You may want to check out some of the past posts. Okies are very friendly and welcoming people and you definitely need to take a vacation there to see how you feel about the area. Eastern OKC is at the foothills of the Ozarks and it is beautiful there. OK has many beautiful lakes and the cities have such beautiful old architecture. We've never been to OKC, but I hope to some day see Myriad Gardens and also ride along the Oklahoma River. It looks beautiful. Since I've never seen it, the only thing I can tell you is that the OKC surrounding area is supposed to have a lot of gentle, rolling green hills.

Louisville has a heck of a skyline! What a beautiful town.
Louisville, KY : Louisville from Indiana photo Louisville is less then half the population of OKC and crime is typically lower in smaller cities. OP you might want to check out Tulsa which is in the NE part of Oklahoma. Tulsa is situated at the foothills of the ozarks and is beautiful. It is smaller then OKC and has a MWest feel to it. OKC is flatter and has a more SWest feel to it. Tulsa has a higher crime rate then OKC and def Louisville but Tulsas crime is mostly on the north part of town from what I hear. Just another city you might check out in Oklahoma. Good Luck! |

OkC is a great area to live in, in my opinion. And, there are many jobs around the area! OkC was ranked in the top 100 cities in the nations for jobs. We are located in a great spot, I-35 (which goes North & South through the country) & I-40 (which goes from East coast to West coast) run right through OkC in which a lot of truckers pass through daily. I don't know much about the trucking business here, but I would assume it's pretty good, being OkC is practicually right in the middle of the nation.
Also, another tip, call the Oklahoma City chamber of commerce. They will mail you all kinds of information on the area (405) 297-8900. Good luck in your decision making!! ![]() |

OKC is popular with truck drivers as a place to live because it is centrally located with 3 interstate highways and a low cost of living. The companies are always wanting to hire drivers.
Crime in OKC is not bad, but there are some rough neighborhoods you will not want to live in. Seems like the near SW area of town has the most crime in the news. |

Hi Jammie
![]() Ursela, no it is good to ask questions, not offensive. You probably know that there is racism in all states, but personally I don't think OK is very bad about prejudice. We all get along pretty well, and like Happytown said OKC has a large black community with good leaders and has other races well represented too. |
