I LOVE the 89ers and always have. I hated it when they changed the name of the AAA ball club to the Redhawks. The 89ers is what OkC is all about, and it's a cool name for a team as well.

The improvements for the Ford Center should still happen though. So vote yes on March 4th.

Time to come up with some names for the new team!!
My choice is OKC 89ers. Doubt it will happen though.

Council leaves door open to buyout

How about The OkC Boomers.. It kind of goes hand in hand with the sonic boom that OkC was known for during the experiments and of course, Boomer Sooner!

What is the significance of 89ers? On a side note: I remember going to their games at the ballpark by the state fair a good 12 years ago. Way back in the day for my time

I would hope that people on the Oklahoma forum would know the significance of 1889. The landrun obviously involves all of Oklahoma. Wouldnt that be hilarious if the landrun only involved OKC. I cant imagine the thunder of thousands upon thousands of people just to get to the middle of the state. lol
Its a great name, but there are many others.

The 1889 land run was the first land run in Oklahoma.

From Oklahoma Gen Web: Oklahoma's First Land Run opened all or part of the present Oklahoma counties of Canadian, Cleveland, Kingfisher, Logan, Oklahoma, and Payne.

Hey, Nameless, I thought Oklahoma History was a requirement in order to graduate? Did you sleep through that class? Even in NJ I know the significance of 89ers.

At least basketball is a game I understand. I always have a problem with football. As soon as I think I know what's going on, they always start running in the opposite direction

I knew that happened in 1889 I just didn't associate the name with that. I always thought of it like the 49ers in football (which I have no clue about either.)
