Moving to Shawnee
Hi! We are moving to Shawnee next week due to DH's job transfer. We're looking for some fun things to do with our kids (11 and 9) that will help them feel not so bad about leaving their friends behind here in upstate NY.
Actually, they're excited but extremely nervous about "fitting in".
Any thoughts?

I think you'll find the people very accepting of newcomers in Shawnee. I don't think you'd need to do anything extra to fit in except be yourself. Us Okies are a pretty friendly bunch. I have been to upstate NY (New Paltz) and it has to be one of the most beautiful areas of the country. You'll find Shawnee a little bit on the ugly side compared to upstate New York, but then again, just about anywhere would be a bit on the ugly side compared to that part of NY.
Anyway, just be yourself, willing to talk to others (people in Ok are friendly) and you'll do fine.

Go roller skating in Shawnee.
Go to the zoo in OKC, Bricktown, take in a Blazers hockey game.

Thanks, everyone! We're from the Finger Lakes area (wine country), and are pretty laid back. It's nothing like NYC here - we're far more laid back. We're friendly and outgoing, but to the kids, this is sooooo new!
peggydavis, we plan to try everything that you suggested!
Thanks again, everyone!!

Synopsis, those first two pics are very pretty. I didn't realize that NY had such beautiful scenery. Actually, I have a neice who lives there, but we've never really wanted to go that direction cause there's so many people and it's nearly as cold as it is here.

Upstate NY is a whole other world from NYC. It's like night and day. It is a very beautiful place. It is cold there in the Winter though. Falls are spectacular.

I have always heard that upstate NY is beautiful but I have only ventured in Manhattan/NYC....Of course all very urban areas. Nice pics!
Every time I travel I seem to be drawn to the urban/city parts of a community...I should rethink and make a drive to the natural beauty of the area (countryside).

Upstate is nothing like NYC. We have very affordable housing here (but high property taxes), gorgeous scenery, tons to do and short commutes. However, we get nasty winters, which I won't miss since I'm not a skier.
Wizzardproduction, you should check out upstate sometime. It's absoultely nothing like NYC. You'll find friendly people up here, which is one of the many reasons that I'm going to miss it. I must say, though, that I found the people in Shawnee to be wonderful as well. Family members are taking bets that we'll have Oklahoma accents by New Year's - LOL!!!
As a totally unrelated aside, Shawnee has the most immaculate WalMart that I've ever seen! It's the little things that count...

Happy, you and I are the opposite. We always look for a few things to do in the city of our destination, but we like to spend most of the time in nature.
