What is it like to live in Edmond OK
I am interested in moving my family with 2 small children to Edmond from Texas. Is it a family town? What is it like? I am also a little concerned about tornadoes, do the schools practice drills?

Edmond is a very family oriented town. There are plenty of activities for the kids and families. The schools have tornado drills and most schools have an area that would be a sheltered area. The weather forecasters are very good, and you would have plenty of warning in the unlikely event of a tornado.

Edmond is very nice. The town is growing and has many new subdivisions going up in the area.
Why the move to Edmond?

We thinking of Edmond because my husband may request a transfer there. We would like to live where there are trees, grass and lakes. Right now we live in the desert. My husband is limited as to where he can go but OK city was on the list. We visited there for a weekend and looked at some houses. I have to say the people were very friendly and we liked what we saw.

Thanks everybody. I am glad to hear from you "Happytown". I have read a lot of posts and you seem like a very positive and happy person. We were thinking of moving to Las Vegas and I read a lot of posts there but mostly everything was negative. Most of the posts in Oklahoma seem to be very positive. I do have a couple of questions.
1. Are the winters extremely cold there and does it snow a lot there?
2. Any "wildlife" to be concerned about? We have scorpions and rattlesnakes where we are now. So needless to say I always "watch my step".
Thanks everyone for your help. I am sure I will have more questions later.

I don't think that in the heavily populated areas of Edmond west of I-35 that there would be any snakes other than harmless grass snakes. I have never heard of any scorpions in west Edmond. The worst things I can think of there would be wasps and yellow jackets. Two of our kids live in the area, one in Edmond and one in Deer Creek. The worst critter problems they have had are mosquitoes and flies.
It can get cold in OK. Last winter was really cold. Some winters it hardly snows at all. We feel kind of cheated if we get no snow. Snow days are fun!

Thanks peggy, you have been really helpful. Any snow yet this year? Are there any other areas we should consider? Mustang was a possibility too.

No, we have not had any snow yet. We could get some this Sunday though.
OKC has quite a few nice areas. What is your price range? In what general area would your husband's employment be?
Mustang has a good reputation. Yukon is nice, as are Norman, Choctaw, and Moore. The Putnam City area of Oklahoma City would have more grass, trees, and ponds, and you would be close to Lake Hefner.

Graduated from Edmond Santa Fe and lived here for a few years.
I would say its more of a preference thing. There is a mega church in every corner of town and few too many "trendy" coffee and cookie boutiques and "French Style Homes" for my tastes.
But my little brother loves it. lots of sports and things to do with kids including some nice parks in town. i went to ESFHS for 2 years and i do recall one tornado drill. It does get a little chilly around Jan/Feb but coming from Denver it wasnt too bad at all for me.
I will tell u that i live in the newer part of edmond and have witnessed my father kill off about 4 or 5 HUGE snakes that have found their way into our backyard. One time i walked out into my garage and yelled out "who put a ball of brown yarn in my shoe?" unfortunately it was an enormous spider and we found 4 more by the end of the week!
