I live in Edmond, and my husband is black, no problems, we both grew up here in Edmond. I would say the places to stay away from for racial issues would be small country towns, unfortunetly we still have racist rednecks in some places here. Great schools and neighborhoods

THere are a lot of nice communities in Moore and in the Mid-Del area that are very diverse. These are all within a decent distance from Tinker, as well. We used to live off of 59 and Sooner and there are a lot of new homes/neighborhoods going in out that direction, as well as on the south side of Tinker and on into Moore.
If you don't want to live down that way, NW OKC (Putnam City school areas) are very racially diverse, and there are some great neighborhoods. |

Edmond is beginning to show more diversity, although I don't think "they" wanted that. I have heard and witnessed too many things from teachers and parents in Edmond Schools (who obviously do not know that I have biracial children) that I will not let my kids go there. They do have a huge amount of opportunities for your children, as do the bigger districts (mid-del, Yukon, Putnam City, etc.)

I just talked to my wife and kids about the schools in Harrah. No race issues to speak of and my wife is very involved here in town so I think she should know. We have lots of Tinker families living in our nice, quiet neighborhood, but we have to move back to Kansas now for a new job. Check out our home in Harrah at the following link: Moderator cut: please, no advertising your home
The houses in town were built too close together, so we chose a little more rural setting when we came from Kansas a year and a half ago. Last edited by Synopsis; 05-20-2008 at 07:35 PM.. |

This neighborhood has a huge sense of community and many many children from ages 0-18. They have many get togethers and are like a huge family. These are all historical homes and there are a couple for sale. One I wish I could have is located right on the sought after blvd. Great place to live in OKC....quick access to EVERYTHING zip is 73107

Sorry to say, I agree with some of the posts about Edmond. Up side is that's getting more of a mix, down side is it's not making everyone happy. Edmond was where the "better off" people built homes to get away from the "lower class". Some areas are VERY snobby and all of it is financially divided.
I live in Warr Acres and my kids go to Putnam City Schools. The area and the schools are a collection of diverse, mostly middle class familes. The neighborhoods are queit and safe and I have to say I love the schools my kids attend, Rollingwood EL. and Kenneth Cooper MS. As with any district not all schools are great. We are a bit far from Tinker AFB, about 20-25 min drive(not in rush hour) but still worth a look. My in-laws are in MWC and the nephews and neice go to the public schools. Again, no complaints. There are some really nice neighborhoods out that way that may not be obvious if you just drive down the main roads and there has been lots of developement over the last few years...business and residential both. As far as the post about Linwood neighborhood goes, Linwood is a great historic area w/ lots of large, older, beautiful houses, but everything around it is crap and not really improving. |
