We've always gone to the one on HWY 81. That was the location the DL Examiner mentioned to us when we first moved here.

I should have also mentioned that in our 30 min. visit we had our vehicle transferred, tagged and "stickered" as well as licensing 3 adults.

When we got all of our stuff switched over it was a simple process. First to the DL examiner where we had our eyes checked... no testing since our CA licenses were valid. Gathered up the paperwork he gave us and drove to the TAG office.

Once there they switched our car registration from CA to OK... an asked us if we had a preference about the numbers on our Plates...

Then they printed up our licenses, pulled a new plate out of a box and gave us the 'sticky' tags for our plates.

No turn around time, nothing in the mail! They do everything right in the office... and ours has never had a waiting line either.

edit: I think it took a total of 30 min for us to be 100% Oklahoma legal.

Ok, so you know what I was talking about, turn around time. Wow, pulled the plates out of box, that just doesn't happen here. I'm also clear about tags being plates and decals being the sticky renewal things. Just a bit of different word usage, but it's all the same. Alright, I think I've got the information I need. I'm sure I'll screw it up somewhere along the line or forget some document. Anyway, all of you have been extremely helpful. If I were to ask someone in CA these questions, they would tell just go to the DMV - LOL.

Default For Tagguy

I'm a little confused on the birth certificate issue. Here in NJ we have a "point" system for getting your license, and requires just about everything except your grandmother's fingerprints. However, they accepted our birth certificates which were issued by the city we were born in, (for DH and I), not the State of NJ. The State Department of Health only issues a Certification of Birth Record, which my two children have.

Are we going to have problems with these docs? They all have the raised seal.

I don't believe I've heard of individual cities, not the state issuing Birth Certificates. However, I will admit I'm not very familiar with NJ's procedures like I am with some of the other states surrounding OK.

There are different kinds of Vital Records. "Certifications" look alot like Birth Certificates but do not have the safety and security features that a BC does. "Certifications" are mainly used for genealogy projects. They will typically be on plain white paper and have a seal on the bottom. Is this what you have? If so, you do not have what you need.

A Certified Copy of a Birth Certificate IS a legal document. It will have the seal of the issuing state, will usually be on safety paper and is approved to "establish identity." This is what you want to make sure you have.

Also note, if you have a US passport, it can be used in place of your BC.

You may be alright with the docs you have. I would really have to see them to tell you for sure. If you would like me or an OK Driving Examiner to view and approve your docs before you leave NJ, contact me directly and I will tell you how to approlish that.

Also, if you are worried, contact the State of NJ, Department of Heath, Vital Records section, and order Certified Copies of your families Birth Certificates.

Hope this helped.

Here is the page on the State of NJ site for ordering Certified Copies of Birth Certificates not just Certifications of Birth. My advice would be to order one for each family member before you leave just to make sure you are covered.

Vital Statistics, NJ : Tips on how to obtain copies of vital records including birth certificates, death records, marriage records, civil union, genealogical requests, Jersey City birth certificates

PS: How many people are now completley confused about birth record?

Take his advice and get it before you leave it will make your life much easier once you get here and have the "right" birth certificate. In Indiana both the county your born in and the state issue birth certificates. I had the county and that is what caused all of the hassle for me. While both had a state seal and were considered "official" due to HB1804 DPS can only accept the one issued from the state.
