Default Possible job transfer to El Reno

My husband may be transferred to El Reno, OK. We don't think we would want to live in El Reno. We would however, like to live within an area where the commute woud be less than 20 minutes. He currently drives about 30-35 minutes to work and is putting way too many miles on his truck!! We have looked into Yukon and found some ok looking apartments. We would be renting first until we were sure of where we wanted to live. Does anyone have any other suggestions if they do not agree with Yukon? Also any info on nice apartments would be appreciated. We also like the fact that Yukon is only about 15 minutes from OKC. We don't want to live in the big city but want the easy access to it.

The commute from Yukon to El Reno would be about 20 minutes, maybe less, depending on how much driving in the towns you have to do.

There are a lot of folks that work at the federal corrections center in El Reno that live out here in Piedmont. Once you learn the shortcut it's only about a 20 minute drive.

Default Piedmont & Yukon are great

Agree with other posts. Piedmont & Yukon are great, and I too would shy away from living in El Reno.

Piedmont is a little smaller (4A schools) than Yukon (6A). Yukon will have more chain restaurants & shopping; but Piedmont is really taking off right now.

If you're open to a rural area, maybe Okarche? It's very small (class A) but it's good schools and low poverty. About 45 minutes from OKC, 20 minutes north of El Reno.

Thanks for the great posts! As far as Yukon goes, does anyone know about the Highland Pointe apartments? We would like to buy a house eventually but renting is probably the way we're going to have to go. Does Piedmont have many apartments? And I'm not sure who mentioned the Prison but yes that is where we would both be working.

What's wrong with El Reno? From the link to the city website that HT provided in another thread it looks like a pretty neat place.

Ya...I wonder why people want to stay away from El Reno. I have seen a similar thread where others said the same thing.
I had a friend that lived their and he always took great pride in the town. His family lived in a large home that was built in the 1890s. I remember him saying that many homes were built around that time. I also read a little about the town. It has a great museum to a fine art gallery owned by a well know artist. The only trolley in Oklahoma. Many local eateries. A large public water park thing like Norman. Lake. A good sized Historic downtown and many other cool things. Do places like Yukon or Mustang have this kind of culture?
Oh well, people love to live in those brand new cookie cutter houses. Maybe they feel safer or that a new home is like getting a new car.

That kind of thing is wonderful but we really like Yukon because it's basically in the middle. We love what we've read about Yukon, and El Reno does sound great but a little too small for us. We don't want to live with all the big city problems but love being close enough to enjoy the positive's of the big city. My husband has always dreamed of living the small town life while being able to enjoy the city life as well. Yukon seems perfect for this. El Reno does sound wonderful but a little too far from OKC. We would be working there so we would still explore the area. I haven't found many apartments to live in, in El Reno. Yukon has a few.

Renting is the way to go in your position. You might find El Reno is more to your liking. It's an easy drive into OKC from ER, but a little far for most people to commute.

My dad worked at the prison years ago, when it was the reformatory. I have a key they gave him when he retired, about 1974 or so. He loved that place.

El Reno is only 25 miles west of downtown via I-40 and many attractions are closer than that. I live in a suburban neighborhood but due to traffic it's 30 minutes to downtown for me. In normal traffic El Reno would only be 25-30 minutes depending on where in town you are. I doubt you'd feel too isolated out there.
